According to Variety , Sony Music is close to acquiring the entire music catalog of legendary band Queen, along with a number of other copyrights, for a value of up to $1.27 billion. This deal is considered one of the largest in the history of the music industry.

Queen's catalog, which includes classic hits like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Another One Bites the Dust," "We Will Rock You" and many more, is considered one of the most valuable assets of the rock era. Owning this treasure trove would bring Sony Music a huge profit, especially after the success of the 2018 biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody."

However, the deal also faced some obstacles because the copyrights to Queen's recorded music in the US and Canada belong to Disney. However, Sony Music will still receive a portion of royalties from Disney after the deal is completed.

Currently, the parties involved have not officially confirmed this information. However, with Sony Music, keeping information confidential in music copyright transactions is not too surprising.

Queen was formed in London in 1970 by Brian May and Roger Taylor, who had previously played together in the band Smile. Freddie Mercury joined as lead vocalist and piano player, and John Deacon became the band's bassist a year later. Queen were rejected by several record labels before signing with EMI. In 1973, EMI released their self-titled debut album, Queen, which included the hit song "Keep Yourself Alive" written by May, and all of the band's subsequent studio albums (except those released by Disney in the US and Canada).

Although they had some success in the UK with the singles "Seven Seas of Rhye" and "Killer Queen" in the following years, Queen's global breakthrough came in 1975 with "Bohemian Rhapsody", a mini-symphony written by Mercury that became one of the most successful and unique singles of all time.

Queen quickly became one of the world's biggest bands, with each member having at least one number-one single in the following decade: Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody", May's "We Will Rock You" (1977), Deacon's "Another One Bites the Dust" (1980) and Taylor's "Radio Ga Ga" (1984). Although they never achieved the same dominance in the US market as they did in other regions, Queen played stadiums around the world and for many years held the record for the largest concert attendance, with their 1985 performance at the Rock in Rio Festival in Brazil attracting an estimated 600,000 people. Sadly, Mercury died in 1991 from complications from AIDS.

Owning Queen's music treasure will be a big step forward for Sony Music in the music industry, opening up many opportunities to develop and exploit the potential of these classic works.
