Southgate helped England win two Euro runners-up. |
Amorim, 40, faces the risk of losing his job after a disastrous start to the season, culminating in a humiliating defeat to Grimsby after a penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup early on August 28. It should be remembered that Grimsby is a club playing in League Two, 56 places and three divisions below Manchester United in the English football system.
The Portuguese was appointed as Manchester United manager last November, in a high-profile move by new boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe. But after just ten months, his position was in jeopardy as his players continued to disappoint. The humiliating defeat to Grimsby seemed to have reached the breaking point.
In that context, Southgate has become the bookmakers' favourite to take the hot seat at Old Trafford if Amorim is sacked. At 54, Southgate has been unemployed since resigning as England manager after the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. He is currently joint-top of the list of candidates with odds of 5/1.
Less than a year ago, Southgate was the favourite to become Manchester United manager with odds of 2/1. However, he deliberately kept his distance while the new Manchester United leadership decided to put their faith in a younger option in Amorim.
Southgate recently told SunSport that he is enjoying a slower pace of life after retiring from the England team, and is writing a book on “leadership.” When asked about a return to coaching, he said: “I have no intention of doing so at the moment and am not actively looking for a new job.”

Carrick is also a strong candidate. |
Sharing the top position with Southgate is Michael Carrick - former Manchester United midfielder, according to TalkSPORT . Carrick was highly rated when leading Middlesbrough, but a decline in form led to his dismissal in June.
Carrick, however, has a strong connection at Old Trafford, having worked as assistant manager under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He was also unbeaten in three games as caretaker manager in 2021, with two wins and a draw, including a memorable 3-2 win over Arsenal.
In addition, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino - now in charge of the US national team - are both rated at 8/1 by bookmakers, while Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, a former Manchester United assistant, is at 10/1.
The next group of candidates, also at 12/1, includes former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, Fulham coach Marco Silva, Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola and former Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez.
