The patient's blood test results showed an increase in blood sugar of 731 mg/dl, HbA1c (blood sugar in three months) to 10.47% (normal 4-6%). Other indicators such as ketone (blood acid), triglyceride (neutral fat), and infection index increased 14, 22, and 302 times compared to normal, respectively. Specific tests in diagnosing pancreatitis showed an index 20 times higher. In addition, the patient's pancreas was slightly swollen, with little abdominal fluid.
The doctor diagnosed the patient with complications of hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis (high blood acidity), severe acute pancreatitis, and a high risk of death. The hospital replaced plasma and performed blood filtration for the patient. After 5 days of treatment, Mr. Thanh's condition gradually improved.
The patient said he spent 12 million VND each month buying herbal medicine to cook and drink three times a day. Two days before being admitted to the hospital, he had a tingling pain around his navel, the pain gradually increased and spread throughout his abdomen, and he was extremely thirsty.
In the past month, the hospital has received 5 emergency patients who abandoned scientific treatment to take herbal medicine. (Illustration photo).
Previously, the hospital also admitted a female patient (61 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) with acute kidney failure due to stopping western medicine for diabetes and taking herbal medicine in pill form. She also had to be hospitalized and given insulin to regulate her blood sugar.
These are two of five diabetic patients admitted to Tam Anh Hospital for emergency treatment over the past month due to acute complications after stopping their medication to take herbal medicine. Doctors added that most cases required intensive resuscitation, insulin infusion to regulate blood sugar, and were difficult to treat.
From the above cases, doctors recommend that patients should go to the hospital for examination, follow the doctor's treatment regimen, not believe in advertisements on social networks, avoid using drugs of unknown origin. Monitor the treatment process and effectiveness, adjust the diet, and screen for complications to avoid damage to the kidneys, blood vessels, heart, eyes, etc.
