Báo Lai ChâuBáo Lai Châu25/05/2023

At this time, macadamia trees are flowering, fruiting and developing leaves and branches, farmers in Then Sin commune (Tam Duong district) focus on weeding, hoeing and fertilizing. This is an important time for macadamia trees to bring economic efficiency, create stable income for people, and contribute to sustainable poverty reduction.

Walking under the hot weather of an early summer day, we had the opportunity to visit the macadamia plantation of Mr. Thung Van Co's family in Na Dong village (Then Sin commune). His family's 100 macadamia trees planted in 2011 are currently producing flower clusters longer than 20cm. His family is actively weeding, hoeing, checking, detecting and preventing and controlling pests and diseases for the macadamia trees. In addition, his family also focuses on fertilizing 0.3 hectares of macadamia trees newly planted in 2022, helping the trees develop leaves and branches. Mr. Co said that macadamia trees are cared for in each stage, such as: leaf development, canopy formation, flowering and fruiting. When the macadamia trees are small, manure is applied to help them recover; when they flower and bear fruit, NPK fertilizer is applied, weeding is done, lime is applied to the base, and pests and diseases are prevented. After harvesting the fruit, manure is continued to be applied to help the macadamia trees grow. Thanks to following care techniques, in 2022, his family harvested over 1 ton of macadamia nuts, deducting expenses for a profit of over 50 million VND.
Then Sin 1 village has over 20 hectares of macadamia trees; of which nearly 5 hectares are in the flowering and fruiting stage. According to the people in Then Sin 1 village, these days, people are proactively weeding, fertilizing, watering and supporting the macadamia trees so they do not break or fall during the rainy and windy season. Through planting and caring, people have realized that macadamia is an easy-to-grow tree, drought-resistant, and has few pests and diseases. In the first 3 years, when the macadamia tree has not closed its canopy, people can intercrop (corn, peanuts) to increase income. Thanks to the high price of macadamia (from 40 - 55 thousand VND/kg), many households earn tens of millions of VND, opening a way out of poverty in the locality.

Then Sin commune leaders inspect the development of macadamia gardens.

In recent years, farmers in Then Sin commune have actively implemented the program of restructuring the agricultural and forestry sector associated with the construction of new rural areas, focusing on introducing high-yield and high-quality plant varieties into production, including macadamia trees. Local authorities have promoted propaganda about the benefits of macadamia trees; at the same time, they have encouraged cadres and party members to pioneer in introducing macadamia trees into the restructuring of farming. Since then, people have voluntarily converted the area of land used for growing ineffective trees to macadamia trees, or intercropped with tea, corn, and peanuts. Macadamia trees have gradually affirmed their suitability to local soil and climate conditions, grown well, and brought high economic value. To date, the whole commune has 137.1 hectares of macadamia trees; of which 31.22 hectares are planted purely, 81.83 hectares are intercropped with tea. There are 11 hectares of macadamia trees that have yielded fruit, reaching 11 tons of fruit in 2022. The macadamia growing model is evaluated by authorities and people as both low-maintenance and high-income. Thanks to macadamia products, each year, the commune reduces 10-15 poor households. Many people in the area have registered to expand the area of macadamia trees, creating a new direction for economic development with a stable source of income.
Mr. Nguyen Van Bac - Vice Chairman of Then Sin Commune People's Committee said: "Currently, the Commune People's Committee is planning and directing people to plant 400 hectares of new macadamia trees in 2023 and the following years. The Commune recommends that people proactively take care of the existing macadamia area; cooperate with businesses in investing in expanding the planting area, purchasing and processing macadamia in a sustainable manner. People need to choose and buy macadamia seedlings with clear origin and guaranteed quality to increase productivity, fruit yield, and increase family income".
It can be affirmed that macadamia trees on Then Sin land have opened up a sustainable economic development direction for farmers. It is believed that in the coming time, the commune will continue to plan and implement macadamia planting by region, contributing to promoting the local economy.
