Previously, the Ministry of Transport assigned the Railway Project Management Board as the investor to prepare a pre-feasibility study report for the Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai railway project and connection with China.
The investor has the right to choose a consultant to prepare the report according to current regulations, with implementation time from now until 2025.
The project aims to ensure connectivity with domestic and international railway networks through China; ensure convenient transit with other modes of transport.
The railway plays a role as one of the main traffic axes on the East-West economic corridor of the Northern region, meeting the transportation needs with high quality, speed, convenience and safety.
The Ministry of Transport requested the Railway Project Management Board to proactively coordinate with relevant agencies and units to develop a pre-feasibility study report for the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway construction investment project according to regulations.
According to the railway network planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway is about 380 km long, double track, 1,435 mm gauge, electrified. Project investment roadmap until 2030 and after 2030.
When completed, the railway will connect Hai Phong international gateway seaport, Dinh Vu port area, Nam Do Son and Lach Huyen, and connect to the Chinese railway in Lao Cai in the north, ensuring that trains can run directly into the Kunming - Ha Khau Bac railway system (China). The next phase is planned to connect from Hai Phong to Cai Lan station (Quang Ninh).
The Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway has basically completed its detailed planning. It is expected that this railway will operate for passenger and cargo transport, with a total investment of about 10 - 11 billion USD.
The Vietnam Railway Authority has just sent out a report to collect opinions from units, experts, and people on the Initial Planning Report for the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh railway route, conducted by a domestic consultant.
The new railway line is expected to have a total length of more than 441 km, passing through 9 provinces and cities: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh (Cai Lan station).
