Thai Nguyen: Good harvest but low price of longan

Thai Nguyen province currently has more than 1,760 hectares of longan, many of which are newly grafted varieties, with trees 15-20 years old. This year's longan crop is in its peak ripening period, with an estimated yield of 17.7 quintals/ha, and an output of over 12,660 tons, an increase of nearly 40% over last year. Thanks to the application of technical advances, the quality of longan is increasingly improved, but the output is still unstable, often falling into a situation of good harvest but low price.

Longan is sold at markets for only 6,000-8,000 VND/kg, a price that is not enough to cover the cost of care and harvesting for the people.

This year, longan output increased sharply but the selling price decreased sharply compared to 2024. In many gardens in La Hien, Vo Nhai, Van Han, consumption was difficult, people accepted to sell at a price of about 5,000 VND/kg but there were still few traders buying. In the market and at traditional markets, the retail price was only 6,000-8,000 VND/kg, 6,000-8,000 VND/kg lower than the same period last year.

Longan is a crop that brings in a good income for many households in the province, with each hectare being able to reach 250-300 million VND if the output is favorable.

Faced with the situation of good harvest but low prices, the authorities recommend that people increase production in a safe direction, meeting market demand to bring products to supermarkets, shopping malls or for export. At the same time, they apply science and technology to adjust the season, helping longan ripen in different seasons, avoiding the situation of ripening at the same time, causing difficulties in consumption.
