In its latest report on the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said that there are currently about 7.6 million children in Ethiopia who cannot and do not go to school due to natural and man-made disasters in the country.
“Ongoing conflicts in Amhara and Oromia have contributed significantly to the increase in the number of children out of school,” UNICEF said.
According to UNICEF, the conflict in the Amhara region remains tense and unstable due to ongoing movement restrictions, making it difficult to deliver humanitarian assistance.
Twenty-eight schools across the region were damaged by the conflict, hampering the start of the new academic year. In addition, some 254 other schools suffered physical damage from heavy rains, cyclones and floods, affecting the education of more than 92,600 students.
Not to mention the difficulty caused by the lack of funding sources for humanitarian aid activities in Ethiopia in the context of increasing demand for essential goods across the country.
This year, UNICEF has raised only 28 percent of the $674.3 million needed for its Children's Action for Humanitarian Aid program.
