Changing mindset to improve the effectiveness of foreign language teaching and learning

On the morning of August 6, in Hanoi, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training coordinated with the Education and Times Newspaper and DOL English to organize the program "Improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning English with Linearthinking" with about 200 key teachers and representatives of English groups of high schools in Hanoi.

The program was implemented in the form of training for general English teachers in the capital. Through the program, teachers have experienced and practiced new ideas related to the work of fostering and developing foreign language teaching skills; at the same time, improving the ability to use English in the classroom, thereby improving students' learning outcomes.

Citing recent research, Ms. Ha Dang Nhu Quynh, a PhD student in Education at the University of Reading (UK), Master of English Teaching at the University of Nottingham (UK), and main lecturer of the program, said: currently, there are many English teaching methods in Vietnam imported from abroad with "weak points" that cause difficulties for students, especially high school students.

Specifically, many old methods such as accumulating grammar and vocabulary, teaching "practice questions"... depend too much on learning complicated vocabulary, difficult to remember, long and difficult to understand sentences. Students applying the above learning methods often find it difficult to express themselves fluently in a foreign language, sometimes after learning a long passage, they still cannot connect the entire meaning of the component sentences...

Meanwhile, Linearthinking is a method of learning English based on logical thinking, mathematics and research on the influence of mother tongue on foreign language learning, applying some super memory techniques. Through this, it creates a particularly effective way of learning English for Vietnamese people, while expanding logical thinking and critical thinking.

The document points out the weaknesses of old English learning methods such as "practice tests" and vocabulary learning.

Also at the program, hundreds of key teachers and representatives of English groups from high schools in the capital city had the first access to the technology platform supporting English learning "Super LMS", a modern method to support knowledge consolidation, helping students do exercises more easily and effectively.
