2025 marks the first year the world welcomes the Beta generation, a demographic phase that will last for the next 15 years.

While celebrating the arrival of 2025, the world is also welcoming the first babies into the world, ushering in a new generation in terms of demographics. Experts say that those born between 2025 and 2039 will belong to the Beta generation, with characteristics, strengths, and challenges different from previous generations.

The Beta generation is predicted to apply technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) at a very high level.

Continuing the generation

Australian demographer Mark McCrindle notes that 2025 marks the end of the Alpha generation (born between 2013 and 2024) and the beginning of the Beta generation. He predicts that the Beta generation will make up 16% of the global population by 2035, with many expected to live into the 22nd century, according to The Hill . Babies born this year will be 76 years old in 2101.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, these are the generations that followed the Great Generation (born between 1900 and 1924), the Silent Generation (1925-1945), the Baby Boomer (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), Generation Y (1980-1994), and Generation Z (1995-2012).

In the last three generations—Generation Y, Z, and Alpha—technology has played a major role in defining each generation. Generation Y experienced the early development of the internet. The internet continued to develop as Generation Z grew older, while technology dominated Generation Alpha. Studies show that most Generation Alpha own mobile phones, and many in this generation experienced years of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. Some even liken Generation Alpha to "iPad kids." This generation is also witnessing the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education.

Expectations and challenges

According to McCrindle, the Beta generation is expected to integrate technology at an extremely high level. "Beta could be the first generation to experience large-scale autonomous mobility, health tracking technology, and immersive virtual environments as standard aspects of everyday life," he predicted.

This expert predicts that the physical and digital lives of Generation Beta will seamlessly blend, after Generation Alpha has become familiar with smart technology and AI. Meanwhile, with technology continuing to develop rapidly, Generation Z parents are likely to be more cautious about how their children interact with the digital world. McCrindle estimates that as many as 36% of Generation Z parents strongly believe that screen time should be limited for their children, compared to 30% of Generation Y parents.

Regarding the challenges, NBC News quoted American generational researcher Jason Dorsey as predicting that Generation Beta is more likely to view climate change as a catastrophic situation with more direct impacts on their lives. Meanwhile, Generations Y and Z are expected to become the leaders who must address this issue. Parents from Generations Y and Z, who have a good understanding of the environment and are adaptable, are predicted to educate their children more about this. According to a Pew Research Center survey of 13,749 adults in the US, 71% of Generation Y and 67% of Generation Z believe that climate change should be considered a priority to ensure the planet's sustainability in the future. Besides climate change, Generation Beta also faces challenges related to global population shifts and rapid urbanization. Following the Beta generation will be the Gamma generation, expected to include those born between 2040 and 2054.
