While bustling to welcome the new year 2025, the world also welcomes the first babies born and the beginning of a new generation, in terms of demographic factors. Experts say that people born between 2025 - 2039 will belong to the Beta generation, with different characteristics, strengths and challenges than previous generations.

Generational Succession

Australian demographer Mark McCrindle notes that 2025 marks the end of the birth of Generation Alpha (born between 2013 and 2024) and the beginning of Generation Beta. Generation Beta is expected to make up 16% of the global population by 2035, with many expected to live into the 22nd century, according to The Hill . Babies born this year will be 76 years old in 2101.

Since the early 20th century, these are the generations that followed the Great Generation (born 1900 - 1924), the Silent Generation (1925 - 1945), the Baby Boomers (1946 - 1964), Generation X (1965 - 1979), Generation Y (1980 - 1994) and Generation Z (1995 - 2012).

In the last three generations, Y, Z, and Alpha, technology has played a big role in defining each generation. Millennials experienced the early development of the internet. The internet continued to grow as Gen Z grew up, while Generation Alpha was dominated by technology. Studies show that most Generation Alphas own mobile phones, and many of them have spent their school years online during the Covid-19 pandemic. Some have even referred to Generation Alpha as “iPad kids.” This generation is also seeing the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education.

Expectations and challenges

According to Mr. McCrindle, the Beta generation is expected to integrate technology at an extremely high level. "Beta will probably be the first generation to experience large-scale autonomous transportation, health monitoring technology, and immersive virtual environments as standards of daily life," he predicted.

The expert predicts that the physical and digital lives of Generation Beta will become more seamless, after Generation Alpha has become familiar with smart technology and AI. Meanwhile, as technology continues to advance rapidly, Gen Z parents are likely to be more cautious about how their children interact with the digital world. McCrindle said that 36% of Gen Z parents strongly believe that screen time should be limited, compared to 30% of Millennial parents.

Regarding challenges, NBC News quoted American generation researcher Jason Dorsey predicting that the Beta generation is more likely to see climate change as a catastrophic situation, with more direct impacts on life. Meanwhile, Generation Y and Generation Z are expected to become leaders who have to deal with this issue. Parents of Generation Y and Generation Z are inherently more aware of the environment and adaptability, so they are expected to educate their children more about this. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center (USA) with the participation of 13,749 adults in the US, 71% of Generation Y and 67% of Generation Z believe that climate change should be considered a priority issue to ensure the sustainability of the planet in the future. In addition to climate change, the Beta generation also faces challenges of global population shifts and rapid urbanization. Following the Beta generation will be the Gamma generation, expected to include people born between 2040 and 2054.
