As the first 10th grade exam under the 2018 GeneralEducation Program, both the literature and foreign language (mainly English) exams in Ho Chi Minh City did not disappoint teachers, experts, and students as they met the requirements of the new program while being emotional, humane, and modern.
Meet the requirements of developing qualities and capacities
Commenting on the literature exam in this year's 10th grade entrance exam, many experts and teachers said that the exam has fulfilled its "mission" according to the 2018 General Education Program, which is to focus on the requirements for developing learners' qualities and abilities, so the questions do not require students to memorize but require skills to solve problems from real life.
Ms. Tran Thi Quynh Anh, a teacher at Trung Vuong High School (District 1), said that the first 10th grade exam under the new program was very good. The exam was still within the ability and understanding of middle school students, ensuring the correct structure and relatively close to the illustrated exam.

According to Ms. Quynh Anh, the highlight and also the point that "touches" many people is the test material. The material is close, emotional and evocative. Candidates will have certain emotions when reading the material. "The questions are good but still have highly differentiated content, meeting the requirements of the admission questions. It requires students to have both skills and the ability to appreciate literature. The social argumentation question is good but is a challenge for students" - Ms. Quynh Anh commented.
Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Giang, a Literature teacher at Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City), said that the exam questions have harmonized knowledge testing and life values arousing, which is a testament to the humane and modern thinking of the questions. The questions clearly demonstrate a high degree of integrity, which is the emotional flow from perception to experience. Both the reading comprehension and discussion sections revolve around the same topic: Maturity is not only physical, but also the process of growing up in emotions, personality and social awareness. The order of questions is arranged reasonably, leading students from perception, analysis to practical connection. It is the coherent connection between the sections that turns the exam questions into a complete journey of thinking, not only testing knowledge but also becoming a humane lesson about life.
In addition, the exam also ensures differentiation with just enough openness, no riddles, clear classification without causing pressure. "Differentiation does not lie in technical difficulty, but in the level of openness of thinking, ability to connect and personal emotions, in the right direction to test true ability, not memorization ability" - Ms. Giang analyzed.
Concentration point at 6-8 points
Mr. Vo Kim Bao, Head of the Literature Group at Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1), commented that although the content of the test is familiar, it is not easy to achieve a high score. According to Mr. Bao, the test has very clear differentiation. With the 2018 General Education Program, an average student who studies with the right goal of developing qualities and abilities can achieve at least 6.5 to 7 points. However, an average student who does not study in the right direction, has the habit of relying on solutions, and memorizing sample essays will not be able to write quality papers. "However, if a student can be confident with the knowledge he has learned, does not need sample essays, sample solutions, and can still meet the basic requirements, he can also achieve a score of 8 or higher" - Mr. Bao said.
Meanwhile, regarding the English exam, Mr. Le Minh Hong Duc, a lecturer at Van Lang University, said that this year's exam was relatively more difficult than last year's, especially in the multiple-choice section with many questions in the form of conversations, requiring candidates to understand the context correctly in order to choose the correct answer. A notable new point is the appearance of an exercise section requiring candidates to complete sentences based on information from a dictionary entry - replacing the phrase order assignment form that existed in previous years. "This is a highly applied question type, requiring candidates to have the ability to reason and apply language flexibly. With a clear level of differentiation, this year's score range is predicted to be concentrated at 7 to 8 points," Mr. Duc commented.
Today (June 7), candidates will take the math test in the morning and specialized and integrated subjects in the afternoon. Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper will continue to post suggested solutions at nld.com.vn.
Troubleshooting on the first day of the exam
Mr. Huynh Van Binh, Head of the examination site at Ngo Chi Quoc Secondary School (Thu Duc City), said that during the literature exam, a supervisor fell on the podium. Immediately after that, the examination site took this supervisor to the hospital for emergency treatment. When the incident happened, the exam papers were already open, so the police force and the examination room supervisor had to accompany this supervisor to the hospital.
According to Mr. Binh, the test site has added another invigilator 2 to this test room, and made a record of any irregularities in the test room. For candidates in test room 24 at this test site, any candidate who uses 2 test papers will have another invigilator 2 sign.
It is known that this testing site has 31 testing rooms with 748 candidates taking the test. Among them, one candidate broke his right arm and was arranged to take the test in a backup testing room. There were 2 invigilators and 1 teacher of another subject to help write the test for the candidates. The room was also equipped with a surveillance camera, audio and video recording equipment to record the entire test taking process of the candidates.
At the Ly Phong Secondary School (District 5) exam site, a candidate could not take the literature exam because he was late. The exam started at 8:00 a.m., but the candidate arrived at the exam site around 9:30 a.m. The candidate burst into tears, saying that he had mistaken the exam time for the previous day's exam regulation meeting.
According to the regulations of the HCM City Department of Education and Training, candidates who arrive more than 15 minutes late after the test start time signal will not be allowed to take the exam. Thus, this candidate missed the first exam, which means losing the opportunity to be considered for admission to this year's public 10th grade entrance exam.
To avoid unfortunate situations like the above, the HCM City Department of Education and Training notes that candidates need to be present at the exam location and exam room at the specified time; present their citizen identification card and registration form. In case they have not been issued a citizen identification card, they must present their student card.
At the Tran Hung Dao Secondary School (District 12) exam site, a candidate used two colors of ink. Although the exam was still allowed to take the test normally, the examination board made a record of the abnormality and warned the candidate. At the Nguyen An Khuong Secondary School (Hoc Mon District) exam site, a candidate with poor health (unable to sit and take the test) was arranged to take the exam in a reserve room.
At the Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District) exam site, a candidate vomited and had to go to the medical room. The exam site provided instructions that if the candidate returned, they could continue taking the test. At the Do Van Day Secondary School (Hoc Mon District) exam site, two candidates marked strange characters at the beginning of the test. The exam board instructed the candidates to continue taking the test, made a record of the irregularities, and warned the candidates that they might be graded together.
According to the regulations for the regular 10th grade entrance exam, candidates will only be considered for admission when they participate in the entrance exam, take all required exams (3 exams), do not violate the regulations during the entrance exam, and all exams have a score greater than 0.

The exam sites held leadership meetings, assigned specific tasks, in the spirit of "clear people, tight work", and at the same time reviewed and inspected all facilities; received stationery, exam papers, scratch paper, etc. After receiving the handover of facilities from the local school, the heads of the exam sites confirmed that the sites had ensured safety conditions and were ready to welcome candidates.
