Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade exam: English is easy, literature has candidates marking their answers

More than 76,000 candidates in Ho Chi Minh City have completed two exams in literature and English on the first day of the 10th grade entrance exam. Regarding the English subject this afternoon (June 6), teachers commented that it was 'too easy'.

English test is not difficult but high classification

Regarding the 10th grade English exam, teacher Tran Thi Van, Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), assessed that it was suitable for the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program. The exam was clearly classified but not confusing; closely followed reality and had high classification. Familiar topics: student life, communication, community activities, sports , food, environment...

Vocabulary, structure, and context are all familiar to current 9th grade students. Questions about signs and notices in life. Rewritten sentences use real communication structures.

According to Ms. Tran Thi Van, the first part is quite basic, but the following parts, word form (29-34) and sentence rewriting (37-40), help classify students very clearly.

The reading comprehension test is quite long, requiring students to grasp the main idea and supporting details. Candidates will easily make mistakes if they skim the test.

Sentences requiring rewriting such as "It was such awful weather…" require students to master advanced structures (so…that / such…that, present perfect, conditional…)

Although the vocabulary in the 10th grade English exam is not too academic or difficult, it is still a barrier for students, especially the long reading comprehension section that requires students to have a relatively good vocabulary.

There are candidates who put strange marks on the literature exam.

According to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, more than 76,000 candidates completed two literature and foreign language tests on the first day of the 2025 grade 10 entrance exam. Compared to the number of 76,435 candidates registered for the exam, 281 candidates were absent on the first day. In addition, at some testing sites, there were situations where candidates marked strangely on the test.

Specifically, in the literature exam this morning, the following cases occurred:

• At the Tran Hung Dao Secondary School (District 12) exam site, a candidate used two colors of ink. The exam site still allowed the candidate to do the test normally, but made a record of the abnormality and warned the candidate.
• There were 2 candidates at the Do Van Day Secondary School (Hoc Mon district) who marked strange characters at the beginning of the test. The Department of Education and Training instructed the candidates to continue taking the test, made a record of the abnormality, and warned the candidates that they might be marked together.
• At the exam site of Nguyen An Khuong Secondary School (Hoc Mon district), there was a candidate in poor health (unable to sit and take the exam) and was arranged to take the exam in a reserve room.
• At the exam site of Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), a candidate vomited and was taken to the medical room and instructed to continue taking the test if he returned to the exam room.

During the foreign language exam, Ho Chi Minh City did not record any unusual situations.

Tomorrow, candidates will continue to take math and specialized subjects (if taking specialized subjects).

Immediately after the exam ended, on June 8, the Department of Education and Training began grading the 10th grade exam. To ensure absolute safety in grading, the department mobilized more than 2,000 teachers and staff to participate in the 10th grade exam grading council. Accordingly, each exam is graded in 2 independent rounds by 2 examiners from 2 different grading groups. In case the total score or component score differs by more than 1.5 points, the head of the grading group will directly grade the exam for the 3rd time.

After completing the marking of all subjects, the chairman of the examination board is responsible for approving the examination results, reporting and submitting all result data to the Department of Education and Training for storage and comparison. All documents related to the examination scores must be sealed and the chairman of the examination board organizes the preservation according to regulations. The process of processing, storing and announcing the examination results ensures the accuracy, transparency and security of the examination results data. The Department of Education and Training is expected to announce the 10th grade examination results on June 25.
