“For nearly a decade, Adams sought and accepted improperly valuable benefits, such as luxury international travel , including from wealthy foreign businessmen and at least one Turkish government official seeking to influence him,” the indictment reads.
The indictment alleges Mr. Adams' illegal conduct stretches back to 2014, when he was Brooklyn Borough Councilman.
According to CNN, on Thursday morning, FBI agents went to Gracie Mansion - Mayor Adams' official residence - to execute a search warrant and summon him. After the FBI searched Adams' home, his lawyer - Alex Spiro, said the agents present there confiscated the mayor's phone.
Eric Adams is the first mayor in New York City history to be indicted while in office. In a statement released Wednesday night, Mr. Adams vowed to fight the charges.
“I will fight these injustices with all my might and spirit,” the 64-year-old politician said. “If I am charged, I know I am innocent. I will demand an immediate trial so that the people of New York can know the truth.”
