A new animal-inspired robot concept has been unveiled, and this time it's a horse, and it's called the Corleo robot. Photo: @Kawasaki. Corleo is a four-legged hydrogen-powered robot designed to be ridden by humans. Photo: @Kawasaki.
It has been announced by Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki Heavy Industries. However, this robot is still in the concept development stage. Photo: @Kawasaki. Unlike previous animal-shaped robots like Boston Dynamics' robot dog Spot, this Corleo robot is designed for people to ride on its back, thanks to the robot's machinery using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and legs specially designed to move on complex terrain. A promotional video released by manufacturer Kawasaki Heavy Industries shows the Corleo robot climbing down cliffs, weaving through a dense forest, leaping across a snowy landscape and wading through a stream. "CORLEO is a completely new form of transportation that combines Kawasaki's motorcycle and robotics technology," said Takashi Torii, CEO of manufacturer Kawasaki Heavy Industries, in a statement. The robot has four legs, each of which can move independently. These legs are also equipped with inward-facing knees and cloven hooves made of rubber (a material that absorbs uneven surfaces and prevents slipping). Photo: @Kawasaki. These hooves can adapt to a variety of terrains, including grasslands, rocky areas, and debris fields. Photo: @Kawasaki. Kawasaki Heavy Industries hopes that one day the Corleo robot will be able to carry up to two people on its back across a variety of environments. Photo: @Kawasaki. "The Corleo robot's hind legs can rotate up and down independently of the front legs, allowing shock absorption when the robot walks and runs," Kawasaki's representative further explained. This robot will also have a display screen in front of the driver like a motorbike, showing important information. Photo: @Kawasaki.
The Corleo will be powered by a 150cc engine powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. Photo: @Kawasaki. Hydrogen fuel cells work by converting the chemical energy from hydrogen into electricity. Hydrogen gas is split into protons (H+) and electrons, and the electrons create electricity that can power an engine. This process produces no emissions, only water as a byproduct. Photo: @Kawasaki. However, this robot is still just an idea for now. Photo: @Kawasaki.
Kawasaki representatives said it could be launched in 2050, but did not announce any specific development timeline. Photo: @Kawasaki.
