Daily Sabah newspaper quoted a statement from Turkey's National Intelligence Organization (MIT) on May 23 saying that they had arrested 11 people, including two Turkish citizens, who were spying for the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
The spy ring consisted of 15 people, led by a man named Selçuk Küçükkaya. The group was uncovered through a 1.5-year investigation into Küçükkaya led by MIT, in collaboration with the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office.
According to MIT, Mr. Küçükkaya met directly with Mossad executives in several European countries. There, Mr. Küçükkaya was trained to become a spy. Mr. Küçükkaya was also taught about the Mossad's secret communication system and was able to use it to contact other agents.
MIT said Mr. Küçükkaya was tasked with gathering intelligence on a company and 23 individuals with commercial ties to Iran. Mr. Küçükkaya monitored the homes and workplaces of the individuals' families, passing on information to the Mossad about their foreign flights, conversations, phone signals, bank accounts and assets.
Mr. Küçükkaya and his group were arrested while sending a package threatening one of the targets. MIT said 11 of the spy group were arrested in an operation in Istanbul, but two escaped and are being pursued.
Israel has not yet responded to this information.
The last time Türkiye said it had discovered a Mossad spy ring in the country was in December 2022. At that time, a team of seven people tasked with spying on Palestinians in Türkiye were arrested.
