'El Nino' is the term used to describe the abnormal warming of surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. It is the most powerful natural phenomenon in the ocean and can cause changes in global climate.
El Nino causes flash floods, forest fires, and heavy rains. This phenomenon occurs every 2-7 years, sometimes more than 10 years, and has been getting stronger in recent years.
Since 2015, Vietnam has been gradually severely affected by the El Nino phenomenon.
The first heat wave in the North recorded temperatures exceeding historical levels in March 1996. In Hoa Binh, temperatures were measured at 41.4 degrees Celsius in some places.
In addition, El Nino also affects river flows in Vietnam.
During El Nino years, most stations have annual flows 10% or more lower than the multi-year average, and in strong El Nino years they can decrease by 50-60%.
