The Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon component project belongs to the North - South Eastern Expressway Construction Investment Project in the 2021 - 2025 period, 88 km long, with 3 tunnels through the mountain.
Currently, tunnel No. 1 and tunnel No. 2 have completed construction, and are installing electromechanical equipment and an intelligent traffic control system (ITS).
Tunnel No. 3 is over 3,200 m long - the longest road tunnel project. The North-South Expressway construction investment project in the East has just officially opened the Right tunnel branch (North-South direction), 6 months ahead of schedule.
This event marks an important milestone, removing one of the biggest bottlenecks in the progress of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon Expressway Component Project in particular and the entire North - South Expressway in general.
Mr. Ngo Truong Nam, General Director of Deo Ca Group, said that during the construction process, they encountered weak geological zones, which changed a lot compared to the investor's original design documents, greatly affecting the digging speed.
Specifically, the weak geological zone is a level IV rock layer, with a strength of less than 25Mpa, almost soil, so the construction units can only dig 1 - 3 m/day, while the average speed that Deo Ca Group has carried out in other road tunnels is 6 - 10 m/day.
To overcome the weak geological situation, the unit has deployed many technical solutions, applying the NATM tunneling method of the Deo Ca system by dividing the blasting section into many small mirrors to reduce vibration, limit risks and organize flexible construction to control progress.
In addition, monitoring work is enhanced, closely monitoring deformation and displacement parameters of structures. Technical milestones are also closely reviewed and checked to ensure absolute accuracy.
“This is a tunnel construction technique that Deo Ca's engineering team has researched and improved through practice from large tunnel projects such as Deo Ca, Cu Mong, Hai Van and has been applied to tunnel No. 1 and tunnel No. 2 of the project, thereby clearing the tunnel ahead of schedule,” said Mr. Ngo Truong Nam, adding that in the condition of construction far from water sources and tunnel excavation requiring a large amount of water, the unit has deployed a water circulation system: collecting, treating and reusing up to 95% of the water.
This solution not only helps maintain continuous construction progress, but also saves groundwater resources, contributing to environmental protection.
After clearing the right tunnel branch, Deo Ca Group will continue to excavate, lower the foundation, and concrete the tunnel lining... For the left tunnel branch, it is expected to be cleared in June, complete the concrete lining of the two tunnel tubes in October, and complete equipment installation by the end of December 2025.
The construction site has been continuously operating, including the April 30 holiday, to maximize time. “This is an important time. The management board always encourages engineers and workers to stay on site and work together to achieve the goal of completing the route on schedule,” said Ngo Truong Nam.
Attending the event of opening the right branch of tunnel 3 and encouraging the workers, Mr. Ho Minh Hoang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deo Ca Group, acknowledged and praised the spirit of perseverance and efforts to overcome difficulties of the engineers and workers at the construction site. The Executive Board has actively coordinated with Project Management Board 2 and local authorities to promote and gradually resolve the problems.
“The tunnel opening on schedule on April 30 is of great significance, demonstrating the solidarity of the entire team. This is an important premise for the entire Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway to reach the finish line by the end of this year in accordance with the Prime Minister 's direction,” Mr. Ho Minh Hoang emphasized.
Currently, at the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon Component Project, Deo Va Group is implementing 50 construction teams, mobilizing about 3,500 staff and workers along with 1,430 pieces of equipment and machinery. The construction output has reached about 8,200 billion VND, equivalent to 62% of the total project volume.
For the road section, the crushed stone construction work has reached about 40%, of which the asphalt paving stage has been carried out for more than 10 km.
