According to the data website Quiver Quantitative, as of July 9th, Instagram's Threads app had over 100 million subscribers. The "Twitter destroyer" launched on July 5th and quickly attracted 30 million subscribers in its first 24 hours. It then surged to 50 million and 70 million in less than two days.
With this achievement, Threads has broken ChatGPT's record. OpenAI's chatbot reached 100 million users in two months. For comparison, TikTok reached 100 million users in 9 months, and Instagram in 2.5 years. However, registrations and active users are two different metrics. Furthermore, user interaction on Threads and the amount of time they spend on the platform remain unclear.
Retaining users is a real challenge, as Threads lacks many features. For example, the web interface only has a reading function; it doesn't support post searching, direct messaging, hashtags, or a Following panel. Because it shares Instagram's rules, Threads prohibits revealing content.
However, this is undeniably a significant milestone, especially considering Twitter currently has 250 million daily users. According to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, Threads' approach differs from Twitter's, which focuses on news and current events. Instagram's new app aims for positive interaction between people and more lighthearted content.
Following the rise of Threads, Twitter threatened to sue Meta for theft of trade secrets. However, Meta asserted that the Threads development team did not include any former Twitter employees.
On Twitter, owner Elon Musk wrote: "Competition is allowed, cheating is not." Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg simply shared that Threads' performance "exceeded expectations."
