Many universities in Ho Chi Minh City have planned to spend tens of millions of VND per person on Tet bonuses, with flexible payment methods depending on the financial conditions and management orientation of each school. Some schools apply a uniform bonus rate to all positions, from leaders to service staff; while many others choose to reward based on job title, position, and actual income of each individual.
In general, Tet bonus policies are based on internal spending regulations and financial autonomy mechanisms, ensuring both the rights of employees and demonstrating the school's recognition of its staff and faculty.
Mr. Pham Thai Son, Director of Admissions and Communications (Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade), stated that the Lunar New Year bonus for 2026 will remain the same as in 2025, implemented according to the internal spending regulations issued and applied from the 2024-2025 academic year. A notable point in this policy is the university's principle of absolute equality in Lunar New Year bonuses, without discrimination based on job title, position, or professional qualifications. Accordingly, all staff, employees, and leaders of the university who have worked for at least one year will receive a uniform bonus of 25 million VND per person.
For employees with less than one year of service, or those with unpaid leave, the bonus will be calculated based on the actual number of months worked. For those who resign or transfer to another position, only those who have worked at the school for more than six months are eligible for a bonus, and the bonus amount will also be calculated proportionally to their length of service. This policy does not apply to daily wage or seasonal contract workers.

In addition, the school also specifies the bonus levels for staff members who have been disciplined or whose performance evaluation results are not high. Staff members who have been disciplined with a reprimand or higher will only receive 70% of the Tet bonus. If they receive a performance evaluation rating of B or lower for two consecutive months in a year, they will receive 90%; if they receive a rating of B or lower for three or more months, the bonus will be reduced to 80%.
In addition to the main bonus, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade also allocates funds for Lunar New Year lucky money gifts for its staff, lecturers, and employees, as well as preparing thank-you gifts for retired leaders and teachers. The total budget for bonuses, Tet gifts, and Lunar New Year lucky money gifts is estimated at over 20 billion VND.
Meanwhile, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) , the Tet bonus policy is applied differently.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Anh, Vice Rector of the university, HUTECH awards each faculty member, lecturer, and staff member a Tet bonus equivalent to one month's actual income. Because the monthly income varies depending on the position, the Tet bonus amount also differs accordingly.
Accordingly, the minimum bonus for faculty, staff, and employees at the school is over 10 million VND per person. For positions with higher incomes, the Tet bonus can reach tens of millions of VND. For example, for the position of vice principal, the monthly income ranges from 40-50 million VND, so the Tet bonus is also correspondingly high.
As of now, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education has not officially announced its Lunar New Year bonus policy. However, following the practice of many years, the university's Lunar New Year bonus is always considered among the highest in the university sector, with the bonus amount for each staff member, lecturer, and employee potentially reaching tens of millions of VND.
In recent years, the Tet bonus policy of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education implements a relatively stable bonus system. Specifically, each staff member, lecturer, and employee receives a bonus equivalent to one month's salary, along with a fixed amount of 25 million VND per person. Notably, the salary used to calculate the bonus includes not only the salary stipulated by the State but also additional income from the university's own salary mechanism, which is built on the basis of financial autonomy.
Based on this calculation, the Lunar New Year bonus at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education varies depending on the position, seniority, and income level of each individual. Accordingly, the lowest bonus for faculty and staff is approximately 30 million VND per person. For positions with higher salary coefficients and income, especially management staff or senior lecturers, the total Lunar New Year bonus can reach 70-80 million VND per person, or even higher.
