On the afternoon of August 22, Hanoi University of Science and Technology announced the admission scores for 52 training majors based on high school graduation exam scores. Computer science major received 29.42 points, the highest among the 52 training majors of this university.

The formula for calculating admission scores based on high school graduation exam scores for computer science is as follows: (subject 1 + subject 2 + subject 3 + main subject) x 3/4 + priority points = admission score. According to the admission plan of this university, computer science is admitted in 2 groups A00 (math, physics, chemistry) and A01 (math, physics, English), in which math is the main subject.

Nguyen Manh Hung, a former student of Trung Vuong High School (Hung Yen province), the top scorer of the A00 group nationwide in the 2023 high school graduation exam, registered for admission as his first choice to the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Hung's scores for the A00 subjects were: 9.6 points in math; 9.75 points in chemistry; and 10 points in physics.

With the above calculation, Hung's admission score for computer science is 29.21, 0.21 points short of being admitted.

Sharing his feelings, Manh Hung said: “When I received the benchmark results, I was very surprised. The benchmark was too high. I regret not being admitted to the computer science major. I was admitted to the computer engineering major, which was my second choice. This major has a benchmark score of 28.29.”

Hung said that since grade 10, he started to focus on taking the entrance exam for computer science at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. “Since grade 10, I have spent a lot of time studying and reviewing for block A00 to be able to get a high score in the high school graduation exam. But now I failed to pass the major I love,” Hung said.

Ms. Ho Thi Minh Thao, Hung's mother, shared: "I cannot believe that Hung is the national valedictorian of block A00 but failed his first choice when applying for computer science. I feel very sad. Hung tried hard to study and review to get a high score on the high school graduation exam with the desire to pass the major he loves. I hope that when he enters university, he will maintain his good academic performance."
