Nguyen Thao Vy, a 9th-grade student preparing for the 10th-grade entrance exam at Tam Vu Town Secondary School in Chau Thanh District , Long An Province, expressed: “Besides reviewing at school, I’m also studying twice as hard. The closer it gets to the exam, the more worried I become because I want to get into a specialized school. This pressure often causes me to lose sleep.”
Thao Vy is not alone; many other students also experience stress and psychological imbalance during the "final stretch" of the exam season and due to family expectations.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh (Ward 3, Tan An City) - a parent with a child in 12th grade, shared: “I know my child is trying very hard, but sometimes I still remind them because I'm afraid they might neglect their studies. Seeing them sometimes annoyed and irritable, I realized that I might be creating more pressure for them .”
Family provides strong emotional support, helping students overcome exam pressure.
According to school psychology experts, many parents think that the more their children study, the easier it is for them to succeed, but this is only true if the children are genuinely interested and receive appropriate guidance. If children study in a state of anxiety or are forced to, not only will the effectiveness decrease, but there is also a risk of developing psychological disorders such as insomnia, depression, and anxiety disorders .
Therefore, the most important thing during this period is for parents to become companions rather than "supervisors." Parents should listen to and understand their children's true desires and abilities instead of imposing unrealistic goals. A sincere word of encouragement and a timely hug are more valuable than criticism or comparisons.
Sharing his experience, Mr. Tran Van Hung (Tam Vu town, Chau Thanh district), whose son is preparing for the high school graduation exam , said: “My family divides my son's study time into separate time slots, along with time for rest and sports . On weekends, the whole family usually goes for a walk in the park or has a light meal to help him relax. I don't put too much pressure on him to achieve good results; I just hope he stays healthy and maintains the best possible spirit when he enters the exam.”
Le Hoang Minh, a student from Hung Vuong High School (Ward 5, Tan An City), shared: “Initially, I felt a lot of pressure because my parents expected me to get into medical school. But when I spoke frankly and expressed my desire to study Information Technology, my parents agreed and encouraged me to pursue my dream. Now I feel more relaxed and can focus on my studies more effectively.”
Based on her experience in school counseling, the Principal of Rach Kien High School (Long Hoa commune, Can Duoc district) - Ha Thi Minh Hien - said: “The school focuses on organizing psychological counseling and career guidance sessions for graduating students . What we emphasize is that students need to understand themselves, set realistic goals, and know how to scientifically manage their study time as well as how to take care of their own health.”
Exam pressure is unavoidable in the learning journey. However, with the right support from family, teachers, and society, students can absolutely overcome it confidently. Exams are an important milestone, but they are not the only thing that determines a student's future. What students need most right now is not only knowledge but also understanding, encouragement, and belief from their loved ones.
