With the desire to get rich in his homeland, after studying abroad in Japan, in 2019, Mr. Dang Van Thai in Cu Dinh village, Viet Hung commune (Van Lam) started a business with a commercial snail farming model. After the initial period of slow snail growth and high mortality rate, he accumulated experience in water treatment and prevention of common diseases in snails. According to Mr. Thai, the snail farming process takes place naturally, so the pond does not need to be as solid as other aquatic species. The best farming conditions are freshwater environments, not contaminated with alum, salt or toxic from pesticides. The suitable farming density for commercial snails is about 200 - 300 snails/ m2 . After 4 months of farming, snails can reach 25 snails/kg. The food source for snails is also abundant and easy to find in nature such as: duckweed, squash, luffa, sweet potato and leaves... Therefore, he takes advantage of the entire area around the pond, builds a trellis to grow more vegetables and fruit trees, both for food and to create shade for snails to live in. On the surface of the pond, add water hyacinth for snails to cling to and reproduce naturally. In particular, the winter months are considered the "hibernation" period of snails, with little movement, so it is necessary to limit food supply to avoid polluting the water environment.
Realizing the large demand for snail products in the market, while the supply is limited, many farmers have switched to commercial snail farming to replace some traditional, low-efficiency livestock. Therefore, along with commercial snail farming, Mr. Thai has invested in breeding snails.
Currently, Mr. Thai sells an average of over 7 tons of commercial snails per year, creating regular jobs for 3 workers with an income of 7 million VND/person/month. After deducting expenses, his family's snail farming model brings in a profit of over 300 million VND/year.
