Scott Carson retires. |
Carson ended his more than two decades of professional playing with 526 matches for clubs and national teams.
The 40-year-old joined Man City in 2019 as a third-choice goalkeeper, earning a salary of £7 million a season. He has caused controversy for receiving high salaries but has not left much of a clear professional mark. In fact, Carson has mainly played a reserve role and a mentor in the dressing room.
Despite only playing 2 matches during 6 years with "The Citizens", Carson is still highly appreciated by coach Pep Guardiola for his great influence behind the scenes, especially in supporting goalkeeper Ederson and new players to integrate and prepare for matches.
Guardiola once praised: “Carson is very important for us behind the scenes. Everyone listens when he speaks."
Shortly after Carson announced his retirement, many former teammates sent their gratitude. Erling Haaland commented: “Good luck, man. You will be missed!”; Ilkay Gundogan wrote: “ Legend, it was an honor to play with you”. Meanwhile, Fernandinho called Carson “GOAT – the greatest player”.
During his career, Carson won two Champions League titles with Liverpool and Man City, although he spent most of his time as a substitute.
