Many farming households in Long Tan commune (Long Dat district) have converted low-yielding hilly and low-lying land to grow Malabar spinach, bringing in an income of nearly one million VND per day.

Growing clean spinach

The entire 4,000m2 of garden land of Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Tan Thuan Hamlet, Long Tan Commune, was previously mainly used to grow Thai jackfruit and other crops, with low economic efficiency. In 2018, implementing the policy of renovating mixed gardens, Ms. Huong renovated the land and switched to growing Malabar spinach. Over the past 7 years, Malabar spinach has become the main crop and main source of income for Ms. Huong's family.

Every day she cuts nearly 100kg of Malabar spinach, which is sold to markets in Ba Ria and Vung Tau at a price of 10-12 thousand VND/kg. During the dry season, Malabar spinach is more expensive.

“Compared to other crops, Malabar spinach is a plant that brings stable economic efficiency and daily income. Thanks to Malabar spinach, my family was able to raise our children and save up to build a house…”, Ms. Huong happily said.

Not far away, Mr. Nguyen Van Hai's 2,000m2 spinach garden is producing lush green leaves. Two years ago, Mr. Hai invested in a sprinkler irrigation system, converting the area from growing corn and fruit trees to growing spinach organically, increasing productivity and product quality.

According to Mr. Hai, after about 2 months of planting, the Malabar spinach will be ready to harvest leaves. You can cut the branches or just strip the leaves. Malabar spinach is harvested continuously, every 20-25 days, the vegetable garden will produce new young leaves, harvesting more than 3 tons.

“Traders come to Long Tan to buy Malabar spinach products. Malabar spinach here has become a commercial crop with stable economic income. In the near future, I will expand the Malabar spinach growing area to 5 sao to get higher income,” Mr. Hai added.

Malabar spinach is easy to grow and care for. A crop of Malabar spinach can be harvested for 4-5 years. When that period is over, the plant is old and grows slowly. At this time, it is necessary to collect seeds, prepare the soil, and plant a new garden.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai said that Malabar spinach has good growth ability and few pests. Every 20-25 days, the plant will produce new young leaves for harvest.

Establishment of clean vegetable cooperative

According to the Farmers' Association of Long Tan Commune, there are nearly 100 households growing various types of leafy vegetables in the commune, with more than 20 households growing Malabar spinach in Tan Thuan Hamlet alone. Previously, most of the garden land area was used to grow fruit trees and low-yield crops, but now it has been replaced by lush Malabar spinach gardens.

Many traders like to buy Malabar spinach here because the leaves are thick, dark green, and do not fall off after 1-2 days. The spinach is cut in the afternoon and transported to the market in the early evening, so it is very fresh.

Mr. Ly Hong Nam, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Long Tan Commune, said that the organic spinach growing model in Tan Thuan Hamlet is being studied by farmer members in the commune. The highlight of this model is not only its high economic efficiency, following the direction of clean production, but also in the organization of production and sale of products. Farmers produce and find their own outlets for their products, so they do not have to worry about being forced to lower prices. The Association will support spinach growing households to access preferential loans such as the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies, the Farmers' Association Fund, and mobilize households to join forces to establish spinach cooperatives.

“With the characteristics of being easy to grow, bringing fast and high economic efficiency, currently, Malabar spinach has been and is a new direction chosen by farmers in Long Tan commune to develop their family economy while agricultural products have fallen in price. This is a model that really brings high economic efficiency to producers,” said Mr. Ly Hong Nam.
