Deputy Minister of Health: Many people with cancer have misconceptions

On May 26, at the first national cancer nursing conference organized by K Hospital, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan stated that cancer prevention and treatment remains a major challenge for world medicine. In addition to the physical and health impacts, cancer patients are always faced with many worries.

In particular, many patients still have misconceptions about "adequate nutrition will nourish cancer cells to grow", or still believe in and follow treatment methods that lack scientific basis. Therefore, the work of nurses in caring for the nutrition and psychology of cancer patients is very important because patients have to undergo many treatment methods over a long period of time, so they need the dedicated care of nursing staff.

Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan also pointed out that currently, nursing work is facing many difficulties and challenges due to lack of human resources and limited professional capacity compared to many countries in the region.

In Vietnam, currently, the ratio of cancer nurses/doctor is 1.8/1, close to the general regulation of 2 nurses/1 doctor. However, the ratio of cancer nurses/1,000 patients is only 21, which is still quite limited.

"In recent years, there have been many nursing training facilities, but there are still no specialized cancer nursing training programs, so they have not met practical and integration requirements," Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan stated.

Meanwhile, Professor, Dr. Le Van Quang, Director of K Hospital, said that in cancer treatment, nurses not only perform technical procedures but also need to build a close relationship with patients, listen, provide emotional support, relieve pain, manage side effects and facilitate the patient's recovery process. Therefore, staff working in cancer nursing require sensitivity, empathy and extensive professional knowledge.
