Prime Minister asks US to limit tax measures on Vietnamese goods

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked the US to limit tax measures on Vietnamese exports, when receiving US State Department Chief Economist Blanchard.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received US State Department Chief Economist Emily Blanchard at the Government Office on the afternoon of October 25, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Prime Minister asked the US to continue opening its market to Vietnamese goods and limit anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures and other unnecessary measures against Vietnamese exports, especially agricultural products and wooden products, which directly affect people's jobs and livelihoods.

The Prime Minister suggested that Vietnam and the US continue to make efforts to boost economic connectivity between the two economies, promote harmonious and sustainable trade exchanges, and create conditions for businesses from both sides to cooperate and invest.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested that in the coming time, the two sides continue to implement concrete measures to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership to develop more substantially and effectively, focusing on promoting cooperation in areas such as economics - trade - investment, science - technology, innovation, digital transformation, semiconductor chip manufacturing, and training of high-quality human resources.

The Prime Minister appreciated the US government's initiation of consideration to recognize Vietnam's market economy status, and suggested that the US soon complete this process.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam will always accompany, support and create an open, transparent, safe and healthy investment and business environment for US businesses to operate effectively and long-term in Vietnam .

The US State Department's chief economist highly agreed with the Prime Minister on the requirement to continue to concretize and effectively implement the new framework of relations between the two countries, especially promoting the key areas mentioned by the Prime Minister.

Ms. Blanchard highly appreciated Vietnam's outstanding achievements in economic growth, macroeconomic management, and inflation control in recent times. She expressed her belief that the increasingly improved investment and business environment in Vietnam will contribute to attracting the attention of American investors.

Vietnam and the US established a comprehensive strategic partnership during President Joe Biden 's visit in September. Bilateral trade reached US$123.86 billion in 2022, up 11% compared to 2021. The US has been Vietnam's largest export market for many years, while Vietnam is the US's eighth largest trading partner in the world and its largest partner in ASEAN.

As of June, US direct investment in Vietnam reached 11.73 billion USD with more than 1,200 projects, ranking 11th among countries and territories investing in Vietnam.

Every year, there are 23,000-25,000 Vietnamese students studying in the US. Vietnam is the leading country in Southeast Asia and the 5th in the world in the number of students studying in the US.
