This morning, May 27, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, within the framework of his official visit to Malaysia and participation in the 46th ASEAN Summit and other related summits in Kuala Lumpur.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh warmly congratulated Timor-Leste on being unanimously accepted by ASEAN leaders as a new member of the bloc at the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025; suggested that the two sides continue to maintain exchanges and contacts at all levels, especially high-level, and proactively discuss and coordinate to reach cooperation agreements in areas of mutual interest such as economy , trade, investment, agriculture, rice import and export, e-Government and digital transformation.
The Prime Minister asked the Timor-Leste Government to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises, including telecommunications and oil and gas enterprises, to invest and do business in Timor-Leste; Vietnam is always ready to share its experience in socio-economic development with Timor-Leste.
For his part, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao sincerely thanked Vietnam for its warm sentiments towards the country and people of Timor-Leste, as well as its effective support and assistance in helping Timor-Leste join ASEAN; affirmed that Timor-Leste especially values and wishes to strengthen comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam, and expressed his impression of Vietnam's remarkable socio-economic development achievements in recent times.

Agreeing with the proposals of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao affirmed his desire to bring the cooperation between the two countries into more substance and depth, especially in the fields of telecommunications, aviation and education; and to coordinate effectively and closely at regional and international multilateral forums, including ASEAN.
The two leaders agreed to further deepen bilateral relations in the coming time, promoting the results achieved during President Jose Ramos-Horta's visit to Vietnam in August 2024; continuing to promote high-level and all-level visits, effectively implementing signed agreements; exploiting the potential for economic cooperation, especially trade and investment, and creating favorable conditions for businesses of the two countries to do business and operate in each other's markets.
The two sides also agreed to promote cultural, tourism and educational cooperation, actively contribute to implementing people-to-people exchanges and promoting the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.
