Effective implementation of solutions to prevent drought and salinity

BDK - Since the beginning of 2025, the Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation has focused resources on expanding the pipeline, urgently installing water meters for customers, creating favorable conditions for households to store enough fresh water for use when saline intrusion occurs with about 4,020 new connections. In parallel with the network expansion, the center also communicated to households about the scope, scale, and area of pipeline opening to participate in water meter connection, proactively equipping additional tools from their own resources to store water for daily use.

The center continues to upgrade the transmission pipeline and network connection to supply fresh clean water to water plants (WTPs) whose raw water sources are contaminated with salt; renovate old pipelines. The total length of the renovated and upgraded pipeline is about 24.4km. Complete maintenance of 32 RO systems of the center, with a total processing capacity of over 3,000m3 /day and night; RO systems are ready to operate to provide concentrated fresh water to people. The center also supports technical advice and repairs of sponsored RO systems that are managed by the locality in communes of Giong Trom, Thanh Phu and Mo Cay Nam districts. Prepare a plan to transport water by barge for 5 affiliated WTPs, ready to transfer raw fresh water to WTPs for treatment during the peak of the dry season when saltwater intrusion occurs.

According to the Director of the Center for Clean Water and Rural Environmental Sanitation Ha Chi Dien, when the drought and salinity occurred, the center deployed response activities such as implementing a plan to provide fresh water centrally from the RO filtration system at the affiliated water supply plants with a total water supply of 2,421m3 . The amount of water supplied to people during the recent drought and salinity increased 2.5 times compared to previous years, as a result of coordination between the water supply area and the Commune People's Committee to widely disseminate information to local people; prepare RO filtered fresh water to provide to people.

In addition, the center also operates a connected water supply network to supplement fresh water from factories with fresh water and low salinity to areas with high salinity. Tan Hung Water Supply Plant connects the network with An Phu Trung Water Supply Plant. During the recent salinity intrusion, at times the salinity of Tan Hung Water Supply Plant's water source reached more than 6‰. An Phu Trung Water Supply Plant adjusted the valves of the pipelines, taking turns operating 24/7 to provide enough water to meet the needs of Tan Hung households at night. Similarly, Thanh Thoi A Water Supply Plant supplies water to An Dinh, Binh Khanh; Ngai Dang Water Supply Plant supplies water to Tan Trung, Minh Duc; Tan Thanh Tay Water Supply Plant supplies water to Thanh An, Tan Phu Tay; Phu Duc Water Supply Plant supplies water to Tien Thuy, Tien Long. This supplementary connection plan has helped reduce the negative impact of salinity intrusion on people's lives.

The Center has also closely and smoothly coordinated with the Red Cross Association of Giong Trom, Binh Dai, and Mo Cay Nam districts to connect with sponsors and volunteer groups to receive 94,500m3 of raw water transported by barge to 6 affiliated water treatment plants to supply water to the network for people with nearly 20,000 households using fresh water by barge solution. The Center proactively coordinated with the Commune People's Committee to install 2 plastic tanks containing clean, fresh water of 4m3 /tank at the People's Committee of Thanh Ngai Commune, transporting clean, fresh water from Tan Thanh Tay Water Plant to supply water to 160 households in Gia Thanh Hamlet, Thanh Ngai Commune. The total water output during the period was 143m3 .

Implementing the direction of the Provincial People's Committee on sharing fresh water resources in the dry season, the center has purchased water for people on days when salinity levels increase from Ben Tre Water Supply and Drainage Joint Stock Company with a total water supply volume for Thanh Tan and Tan Thanh Binh water plants of 13,713m3 ; NID Production and Trading Joint Stock Company - Tan My, An Hiep, An Hoa Tay water plants and Mo Cay Water Supply and Drainage Company Limited of 3,300m3 to supply water to An Dinh and Binh Khanh communes, Mo Cay Nam district. 464 water meters have been installed for Long Thanh islet area, Son Phu commune has installed 140/197 households; Hung Phong commune has installed 347/1,515 households.

In the coming years, the Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation will proactively research and propose specific solutions at each time appropriate to the actual situation.
