( Bqp.vn ) – On the morning of October 4, in Hanoi, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Minister of National Defense , received Ms. Aler Grubbs, Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Vietnam.

At the reception, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien emphasized that in recent times, the relationship between the two countries in general and the Vietnam-US defense relationship in particular has seen positive developments. The upgrading of the relationship between the two countries to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace , Cooperation and Sustainable Development is a favorable basis for implementing cooperation in various fields, including defense cooperation.
Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien thanked and appreciated USAID’s efforts in Vietnam in supporting the implementation of war consequence settlement activities in Vietnam; especially the increase in the budget to support dioxin remediation in the Bien Hoa airport area and the additional budget to support people with disabilities in provinces heavily sprayed with Agent Orange. Notably, during the recent official visit to the United States by Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, the United States announced a new aid package worth 130 million USD for the Bien Hoa airport project, thereby demonstrating the United States’ commitment to overcoming war consequences in Vietnam.
Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien suggested that in the coming time, USAID in Vietnam should coordinate with the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense to effectively implement cooperation documents on overcoming the consequences of war that have been agreed upon by both sides; continue to prioritize mobilizing resources to accelerate progress, towards thoroughly handling dioxin-contaminated soil in the Bien Hoa airport area; closely coordinate to organize the implementation of the project to support the improvement of the quality of life of people with disabilities in 8 provinces heavily sprayed with Agent Orange; effectively implement the Letter of Intent (signed in January 2021) to cooperate in organizing communication activities on overcoming the consequences of post-war bombs, mines and toxic chemicals.

For her part, Ms. Aler Grubbs thanked Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien for taking the time to meet her; expressed her deepest condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam for the heavy losses caused by storm No. 3 ( Yagi ), and expressed her impression of the efforts of the Government, the Army and the people of Vietnam in responding to this natural disaster.
Affirming that she will continue to coordinate with the functional agencies of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense to effectively implement the cooperation contents that the two sides have agreed upon, Ms. Aler Grubbs expressed her hope that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense will continue to coordinate and create favorable conditions for USAID in effectively implementing the work of overcoming the consequences of war in Vietnam.
