The Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) is moving ahead with its bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics for the first time, after a four-month feasibility study found there was interest in hosting the games in Stockholm.
Sweden, the land of winter sports , has unsuccessfully bid to host the Winter Olympics eight times, including the 2026 Olympics, for which Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo were chosen as host cities. The Swedish capital Stockholm hosted the Summer Olympics in 1912.
“Our preliminary study shows that Sweden has the opportunity, the understanding and the will to host the Winter Olympics in 2030,” said SOK President Hans von Uthmann.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) originally planned to announce the host country for the 2030 Winter Olympics at its annual conference in Mumbai, India this year, but has postponed the decision until before the 2024 Paris Olympics due to concerns about climate change.
The Japanese city of Sapporo, which hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, was considered a strong candidate for 2030 but postponed its bid following a corruption scandal surrounding the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Salt Lake City in the US, which hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, is also a potential contender, but has expressed its preference for hosting the 2034 Winter Olympics instead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The IOC said it may announce the host cities for the 2030 and 2024 Winter Olympics at the same time to create stability for the Winter Olympics, and that the hosting rights may rotate “among a number of cities and regions” as the number of cities willing and able to host is dwindling due to climate change.
