Tien Giang: Water hyacinth re-invades canals, herbicides are used to treat them

Also recorded on the morning of June 7, on some canals in Go Cong Dong district, there was also a situation of using herbicides to treat water hyacinth.

In 2018, the People's Committee of Tien Giang province organized a "campaign" to salvage water hyacinth from rivers, canals and ditches in the province.

At the same time, propose a plan to manage and maintain the clearness of rivers, canals and ditches in the province.

Recently, on December 14, 2022, the Provincial People's Committee also issued Plan No. 390/PA-UBND on managing and maintaining the openness of canals and ditches in Tien Giang province.

A canal in Go Cong Dong district also appeared to use herbicides to treat water hyacinth.

Accordingly, the Provincial People's Committee requested leaders of relevant provincial departments and branches, Director of Tien Giang Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, Chairmen of People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to urgently develop plans and organize the implementation of specific contents.

Water hyacinth is dense in Ram Ve River (Go Cong Town).

One of the important contents assigned by the Provincial People's Committee to the People's Committees of districts, cities and towns is to proactively inspect, detect and strictly handle organizations and individuals who discharge waste and garbage into canals and ditches; use herbicides to kill water hyacinth causing environmental pollution; strictly handle cases of violations of the protection scope of irrigation works in the management area according to Decree No. 03/2022/ND-CP of the Government regulating administrative sanctions in the field of natural disaster prevention and control, irrigation and dykes.

However, currently, the use of herbicides to kill water hyacinth is taking place with potential risks and unpredictable consequences for the environment.
