THE FIRST GROWER OF GRAPEFRUIT ON THE DONG NAI RIVER

Mr. K'Bao - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dinh Trang Thuong Commune, Di Linh District introduced: "Mr. Le Van Hoang is a typical good farmer of Dinh Trang Thuong Commune as well as Di Linh District. His economic models are all effective and most importantly, Mr. Hoang is a progressive farmer, a person who encourages, focuses, and unites farmers in the same area to work collectively, bringing abundant income to the people of Village 3, Dinh Trang Thuong Commune".

Mr. Le Van Hoang, a talented farmer mentioned, proudly shared: “I was born in 1975, right when the country was completely unified. Although life was still very difficult, with peace , farmers just need to work hard and it will be different”. As Mr. Hoang himself assessed, residing in Dinh Trang Thuong, a very difficult area, where many indigenous people live, Mr. Hoang is one of the pioneers in changing the crop structure. “When I settled in Hamlet 3, Dinh Trang Thuong Commune, people mainly grew coffee. Coffee prices fluctuated, and care conditions were poor, so life was still difficult. Instead of growing coffee like the people, I went to learn, calculate and switched to growing fruit trees. That is green-skinned grapefruit”, Mr. Le Van Hoang recalled the decision from 20 years ago, in 2005.

After 20 years of planting, the family's grapefruit garden has been called the old grapefruit garden. Mr. Hoang said that to learn the craft of growing grapefruit, he traveled to the West, looking for reputable grapefruit orchards, grapefruit gardens with the best productivity to study and import varieties. "The land of Dinh Trang Thuong is located right next to the Dong Nai River, the soil is very suitable for grapefruit trees. Therefore, when I brought the grapefruit tree back to plant, the grapefruit tree grew very quickly and after only 36 months, the tree bore fruit at the beginning of the season. At that time, green-skinned grapefruit was still an uncommon crop in new lands, bringing in very good income. The grapefruit garden has brought high income to my family", Mr. Le Van Hoang also said that he currently has 5 hectares of grapefruit, specializing in growing green-skinned grapefruit.

In addition, in the past two years, realizing that mulberry has high economic efficiency and quick income, he also planted 3 hectares of mulberry to raise silkworms, earning hundreds of millions of VND/month. He hired 5-6 workers to work regularly, contributing to creating jobs for people in the village. Every year, after deducting expenses, his family earns over 2 billion VND.

GOOD AT HOUSEHOLD CARE, TAKING CARE OF RELATIVES

"Not only is he a good farmer, growing good grapefruit, growing high-yielding mulberry for high income, Mr. Le Van Hoang is also a very active farmer of our Dinh Trang Thuong", Chairman of the K'Bao Farmers' Association assessed. Village 3, Dinh Trang Thuong Commune, the production area of hundreds of residents, is a very difficult area to travel, with mountainous and steep roads, and the roads are also in a phase of not being focused on. To build an easy-to-travel road, and help people easily transport agricultural products, Mr. Le Van Hoang mobilized farmers in the area to build the road. He himself contributed 300 million VND to repair the common road to the production area, and poured rocks to make it easier for vehicles to pass during the rainy season in the highlands. Mr. Hoang reported good news, from the capital of the agricultural sector, there has been over 3 billion invested in building the road to the production area. He mobilized people in the village to pay counterpart funds, promoting the road construction as quickly as possible.

Mr. Le Van Hoang was also the first person in the area to raise silkworms and encouraged people to raise silkworms. “Silkworms are animals that generate income very quickly, just a few acres of mulberry are enough for people to have money every month. I encouraged people to raise silkworms first so that they can have a regular income. Second, raising silkworms requires a clean environment, safe mulberry cultivation, the more concentrated the mulberry area, the higher the success rate,” Mr. Le Van Hoang shared.

Not only stopping at raising silkworms by his family, he is also an active advocate for the establishment of the Dinh Trang Thuong Mulberry Cooperative. According to him, by establishing a cooperative, farmers will create links to share mulberry seeds and silkworms, support each other in terms of techniques as well as support nets and shelters during peak times. The Mulberry Cooperative will help mulberry growers and silkworm breeders in Dinh Trang Thuong to concentrate their strength, bringing stable income to farmers.

Mr. K'Bao assessed that mulberry is a new crop of Dinh Trang Thuong commune, which the commune is very interested in, mobilizing and supporting people to establish cooperatives for sustainable development. Therefore, Mr. Le Van Hoang's enthusiasm in focusing on people to grow mulberry and raise silkworms is a very effective direction, suitable for the economic development of the locality, contributing to the increasingly sustainable development of Dinh Trang Thuong countryside.
