
The Institute of Medicinal Materials is a unit under the Ministry of Health , with the function of scientific research and comprehensive technology development in the field of medicinal materials; advising the Ministry of Health on medicinal material development; researching the modernization of traditional medicine; organizing production, business and joint ventures and associations in the production and business of medicinal materials, medicines and other preparations from medicinal materials; training and fostering staff specializing in Medicinal Materials - Traditional Medicine, Pharmacology - Clinical Pharmacy.
The Institute of Medicinal Materials was established on April 13, 1961 and was arranged according to Decision No. 246/QD-TTg dated February 12, 2014 of the Prime Minister on promulgating the list of public service units under the Ministry of Health. With a tradition of nearly 65 years of construction and development, the Institute has had many achievements in the research, conservation, development and application of Vietnamese medicinal materials, not only making an important contribution to the cause of caring, protecting and improving people's health but also contributing to creating livelihoods for people, especially for ethnic minorities and mountainous, remote and isolated areas.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan said that the health sector in general and the Institute of Medicinal Materials in particular are entering a new stage of development with many favorable opportunities as the development of traditional medicine and medicinal materials always receives the attention of the Party, the National Assembly, and the Government through policies to encourage and promote the potential strengths of traditional medicine and medicinal materials in Vietnam.
On September 9, 2025, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW on a number of breakthrough solutions to strengthen the protection, care and improvement of people's health; on September 15, 2025, the Government issued Resolution No. 282/NQ-CP: The Government's Action Program to implement Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo, which requires: Promoting the potential and strengths of traditional medicine, the potential strengths of medicinal herbs, promoting planning and development of medicinal herb growing areas that meet standards; Preserving traditional knowledge and promoting the multi-purpose value of medicinal herbs, traditional remedies and methods; Focusing on improving the quality of traditional medicine, especially traditional medicines and medicinal herbs to reach the same level as countries with developed traditional medicine.
To meet the requirements of the tasks in the coming time, Minister Dao Hong Lan requested the Party Committee and leaders of the Institute of Medicinal Materials to continue promoting the tradition of solidarity, collective intelligence, building a professional, democratic and transparent working environment. In addition, innovate management thinking, improve research and technology transfer capacity, develop valuable medicinal products, serve people's health care and export.
The Institute needs to promote international cooperation, connect with universities, research institutes, businesses, and localities to expand the growing area and develop the value chain of Vietnamese medicinal herbs. Preserve and promote the identity of the Institute of Medicinal Materials - the leading national unit, worthy of being a leading medicinal herb research center at the same level as countries with developed traditional medicine.

Speaking on accepting the new assignment, Dr. Tran Minh Ngoc affirmed that the instructions of the Minister of Health are important orientations for the Institute of Medicinal Materials to continue promoting tradition, develop sustainably and be worthy of the position of the national leading unit in developing medicinal materials, medicinal drugs, traditional medicines and products from medicinal materials.
The new director affirmed that together with the Party Committee and leaders of the Institute, he will make every effort to inherit, innovate, promote traditions, and strive to build the Institute of Medicinal Materials into a modern, internationally integrated center for research and development of medicinal materials, practically serving the cause of protecting and caring for people's health.
