Rare and complex cases, little reported in literature
Specifically, Dr. Nguyen Truong Khuong reported on “Surgery for a hemangioma that completely occupied the larynx.” The patient, Ms. A. (40 years old), had a feeling of something stuck in her throat and often choked on food 2 months before being hospitalized.
Because she subjectively thought that it was just a sign of indigestion and stomach pain, the patient did not see a doctor but bought medicine to take on her own. When the symptoms of difficulty swallowing became more obvious, the woman went to several local hospitals and was discovered to have a hemangioma compressing almost completely the larynx.
Over time, the patient was unable to eat or drink. At the Saigon South International General Hospital, Ms. A. was examined in the Ear - Nose - Throat department.
Through in-depth examination, Dr. Nguyen Truong Khuong noted that this was a case of a large hemangioma occupying the entire larynx, causing difficulty breathing and swallowing - symptoms that are easily confused with common diseases of the upper respiratory tract.
Faced with the dangerous situation, Dr. Khuong planned surgery.

“This is one of the rare cases, not a standard surgery, mentioned very little in medical literature, when the boundary between the airway and the blade is only a few millimeters apart, especially when the patient has a history of heart valve replacement and anticoagulant use.
Even a small mistake can cause severe bleeding and be life-threatening. Therefore, the surgery requires careful preparation, precise calculation of each operation and smooth coordination between specialists," the doctor shared.
Firmly integrating from the operating room to the scientific forum
Before surgery, the patient was stopped from taking anticoagulants for 5 days and an active tracheostomy was performed to ensure airway safety. During the many hours of surgery, Dr. Khuong and his team used bipolar electrocautery combined with an ultrasonic knife to completely remove the tumor, minimize blood loss and preserve the laryngeal structure.
After surgery, the patient recovered well, with normal speech, swallowing and breathing functions. This result demonstrates the surgical precision and ability to handle complex cases of the medical team at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital.
