On October 28, the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital announced that it had successfully performed surgery on a patient with HVT, who had two types of cancer at the same time: laryngeal and thyroid.
Mr. HVT (53 years old, living in Tay Ninh province) came to Ho Chi Minh City for medical examination due to hoarseness lasting more than 6 months.
The results of endoscopic biopsy showed that the patient had laryngeal cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). During the pre-operative tests, the doctor discovered another lesion that was suspected of being thyroid cancer. The results later confirmed that the patient had papillary thyroid cancer.
According to Dr. Le Tran Quang Minh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, this is a very rare case where cancer is separate in two organs and has different histological nature.
Therefore, the team performed surgery at two locations at the same time: partial laryngectomy with an ultrasonic knife and total resection of the right thyroid lobe. Thanks to the ultrasonic knife surgery, the patient did not bleed and the wound healed quickly.
After surgery, patients are planned for radiation therapy, chemotherapy and postoperative monitoring specific to each type of cancer.
