On October 28th, the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital announced that they had successfully performed surgery on patient HVT, who was suffering from two types of cancer simultaneously: laryngeal and thyroid cancer.
Mr. HVT (53 years old, residing in Tay Ninh province) came to Ho Chi Minh City for medical examination due to hoarseness that had lasted for more than 6 months.
The results of the endoscopic biopsy revealed that the patient had laryngeal cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). During pre-surgical testing, the doctor discovered an additional lesion suspected of being thyroid cancer. Subsequent results confirmed that the patient had papillary thyroid cancer.
According to Dr. Le Tran Quang Minh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, this is a very rare case where the cancer is isolated in two different organs and has different histological characteristics.
Therefore, the surgical team performed the surgery simultaneously at two locations: a partial laryngectomy using an ultrasonic scalpel and a total right thyroidectomy. Thanks to the ultrasonic scalpel, the patient experienced no bleeding and healed quickly.
After surgery, patients are given a treatment plan including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and specialized post-operative monitoring tailored to their specific type of cancer.
