Continued efforts to combat illegal fishing

Working with the delegation were Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Phuong; Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Hai Minh and related departments and branches.

The delegation worked with the Provincial People's Committee on the situation of production, management of fisheries activities, fisheries infrastructure and implementation of the 2017 Fisheries Law and inspected the implementation of the EC's recommendations on combating IUU fishing; the direction of the Standing Secretariat, the Prime Minister and the implementation of the conclusions of the National Steering Committee on IUU.

Reporting at the meeting, a representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the aquaculture area in the first 6 months of the year in Thua Thien Hue province is estimated at 2,800 hectares, equal to the same period in 2022. The total aquatic product output in the first 6 months is estimated at 31,000 tons, an increase of 0.7% over the same period. The work of regenerating aquatic resources has been focused on, releasing a total of more than 710,800 shrimp, crabs, and fish of all kinds into water bodies.

The province currently has 679 registered fishing vessels; the rate of fishing vessels that have been granted fishing licenses is 677, reaching 99.7%; the remaining 02 vessels have not been granted licenses because the vessels are being converted to shore. All fishing vessels going to sea for fishing activities have fishing licenses. All fishing vessels leaving and entering the fishing port are still within the inspection period. 100% of fishing vessels going to sea for fishing activities have active VMS equipment. In Thua Thien Hue, no fishing vessel has lost VMS data connection for more than 10 days. Up to now, fishing vessels in Thua Thien Hue province have not violated illegal fishing in foreign waters.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province Nguyen Van Phuong said that the province has identified the fight against IUU fishing as one of the important tasks that the Provincial People's Committee is interested in directing and implementing. It has directed to strengthen the responsibility of local Party committees and authorities, and related organizations; attach responsibility to leaders in management, supervision, and implementation. Regularly organize inspections and checks on the implementation of the fight against IUU fishing. At the same time, post-inspection of the performance of public duties of officials assigned to perform the task.

Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Phuong affirmed that in the coming time, the province will implement more effective measures to overcome the shortcomings and limitations that the Delegation has pointed out.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien acknowledged and highly appreciated the province's efforts in implementing the EC's recommendations on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The Deputy Minister suggested that the province should implement more drastic and synchronous solutions to meet the requirements of the EC's recommendations.
