Fast charging technology breaks new records. It can fully charge your smartphone in 5 minutes, faster than it takes you to write an email.
The 320-watt fast charging technology, called “320W SuperSonic Charge,” was developed by Chinese consumer electronics company Realme and beats previous chargers. The previous record was held by smartphone maker Redmi, a subsidiary of Xiaomi, when it unveiled 300W technology to charge a device in 4 minutes and 55 seconds in February 2023.
Realme representatives demonstrated the new technology at the Realme 828 Fanfest event in Shenzhen, China on August 14. The record-breaking fast charging capability can charge a smartphone battery to 26% in 1 minute and to 50% in less than 2 minutes, and it only takes 4 minutes and 30 seconds to fully charge the phone.
Unlike conventional charging technology, in which power is delivered to one or more battery cells in sequence, fast charging technology charges multiple battery cells in a single battery simultaneously.
During the demonstration, Realme representatives fast-charged a foldable battery design with a capacity of 4,420 milliamp-hours, stacked four cells on top of each other. This design offers 10% more capacity than conventional designs, the company representative said.
According to a promotional video posted on social platform X, scientists shrunk each battery cell into multi-layer structures to pack more charge into a smaller space before folding four of the cells together to mimic the shape of a satellite panel.
The company has also created a power adapter called the “Pocket Cannon” that has a power density of 3.3 watts per cubic centimeter. Other devices, including iPhones with USB-C ports, will receive power from the adapter, but not at the same speed. Realme’s previous technology could fully charge the Realme GT Neo 5 smartphone in less than 10 minutes.
The new adapter can be used with multiple fast charging standards, the company said, including UFCS, PD, and SuperVOOC, and has two USB-C ports so users can charge two devices at once. The maximum charging speed is up to 150W for Realme smartphones and 65W for compatible laptops.
Realme representatives also revealed the "AirGap" voltage transformer, which ensures that high voltage is isolated from the smartphone battery in case of any electrical incidents such as circuit failures. This is to prevent damage to the smartphone.
The transformer works on a principle called “contactless electromagnetic conversion.” This small transformer steps down the voltage to 20 volts to protect battery life and helps the fast charger maintain 93% power efficiency while charging.
