According to 9to5Mac , Apple CEO Tim Cook is being pressured to provide information about the company's cooperation with the Trump administration regarding tariffs.
Accordingly, in a letter, Senator Elizabeth Warren stated that the Apple CEO's working with Mr. Trump "creates a lack of formal transparency." This move comes after Warren and other senators questioned the $1 million contribution by Cook and others to Trump's inauguration fund in January.
In the letter, Warren asked the Apple CEO to answer four specific questions, including the nature of the discussions, details of the exchanges prior to the exemption announcement (the evening of April 12), when Apple learned of the exemption decision, and the value of the additional profits Apple gained from this exemption.
Previously, US President Donald Trump announced a policy of tariffs and retaliatory taxes for many countries, especially 125% on goods manufactured in China, causing chaos in the technology industry.
If tariffs take effect, companies like Apple will face pressure to raise product prices. Meanwhile, the new policy helps devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and AirTags avoid heavy tariffs when imported into the US.
However, by the evening of April 12th (Vietnam time), President Trump announced exemptions for many electronic devices from tariffs. Notably, during an official meeting with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, President Donald Trump confirmed that he had decided to temporarily exempt import tariffs on many technology items such as phones, computers, and semiconductor components after a conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook.
The US President said that his decision to temporarily postpone reciprocal tariffs on smartphones showed his flexibility. He also said he had spoken with the Apple CEO.
"I haven't changed my mind, but I'm flexible. You can't just have one wall and go straight through it. Sometimes you have to go around it, under it, or over it. I recently spoke with Tim Cook. I've helped Tim Cook and the entire industry. I don't want to hurt anyone," the US President said.
