Finding the culprit causing unexplained strokes in young people

In a study recently published in the scientific journal of the American Heart Association, scientists have found a surprising culprit causing the increasing number of unexplained strokes in young people.

Traditional risk factors for stroke are well known, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and obesity. However, data shows that more and more young people without these risk factors are still having unexplained strokes. New research aims to find the main culprit behind these unexplained strokes, according to News Medical .

Researchers from Helsinki University Hospital in Helsinki, Finland, analyzed data from 1,046 people aged 18 to 49, with an average age of 41. Of these, 523 had suffered a stroke of unknown cause and 523 had no history of stroke.

The authors examined the associations of 12 traditional risk factors, 10 unconventional risk factors, and 5 female-specific risk factors.

They also looked closely at cases of heart defects. Heart defects are usually harmless but increase the risk of stroke.

Results found:

People with heart defects may be twice as likely to have a stroke from “unusual” causes. “Unusual” causes include: Blood clots in the veins, migraines, kidney disease, liver disease or cancer.

Notably, while each traditional risk factor increased the risk of stroke by 41%, each “unusual” risk factor increased the risk of stroke by up to 70%.

When analyzed further, the authors found that conventional risk factors accounted for about 65% of strokes, compared with 27% due to "unusual" risk factors and 19% due to women-specific risk factors.

However, in people with heart defects, traditional risk factors accounted for only 34%, compared with 49% due to "unusual" risk factors, and about 22% due to risk factors unique to women.

The Biggest Culprit of Unexplained Strokes: Migraines

The biggest culprit of unexplained strokes

In particular, research has found the biggest culprit in unexplained strokes: Migraines, according to News Medical.

It turns out that this is the leading cause of strokes of unknown cause, also known as cryptogenic strokes, especially in women. And the rate of strokes from this cause is especially high in people with heart defects, accounting for 46% of strokes, compared with about 23% in people without heart defects. This represents a double risk for people with heart defects.

We were surprised by the “unusual” risk factors, especially migraine, which could be one of the leading risk factors for stroke in young people, said lead author Dr Jukka Putaala, Head of Stroke at the Neurological Centre, Helsinki University Hospital.

Up to half of strokes in young people, especially in women, are of unknown cause. Effective prevention requires careful and regular assessment of traditional and unusual risk factors in this age group. Careful screening of those who have had a stroke is also recommended to prevent future strokes, Dr. Putaala noted.
