Varied play style
With superior class and experience, Al Muharraq seemed to have an overwhelming victory over the Vietnamese men's volleyball team. However, everything happened beyond the audience's expectations.
Setter Van Duy once again showed his important role thanks to his ability to change with unpredictable passes. Facing the opponent's superior height, Van Duy's "weird" passes opened up attacking opportunities for Sport Center 3.
He repeatedly put his teammates Ngoc Thuan, Quoc Duy, Quoc Du and even the middle blockers Duy Tuyen and The Khai in favorable positions to score points. Van Duy's only weakness is his poor serving ability and allows the opponent to easily score points.
In all 4 games, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team was never left too far behind at the end of the game. They even won the second game with a score of 25-20. Besides using Van Duy appropriately, coach Tran Dinh Tien also used the offensive serve strategy to break the first step of the Al Muharraq players. The powerful serve ability of Ngoc Thuan, Quoc Duy, Duy Tuyen... brought advantages to Sport Center 3 many times.
Fitness issues, step one
However, coach Tran Dinh Tien's tactical calculations all fell into a deadlock when the opponent was still a stronger team. They were superior thanks to a squad of tall and agile athletes such as Alexandre Ferreira (2.02m), Jacob Link (1.97m), Van Garderen Maarten (2m)...
This advantage helps them to attack past the Sport Center 3 defense. At the same time, their physical strength also helps Al Muharraq gain the upper hand at crucial moments.
As in game 3, the Vietnamese men’s volleyball team was excited after winning game 2 and leading 4-1. But then the Vietnamese athletes showed signs of fatigue after having to exert themselves for continuous chasing and attacking. From then on, they started to slow down and continuously lost points.
The first step is also a difficult problem for Vietnamese volleyball, as it has existed for many years. The lack of a good first step cover player and back line defense has significantly reduced the team's attacking ability. Ngoc Thuan is a main attacker who can score well. But it is not easy for him to take on both tasks, especially against teams with powerful offensive serving ability.
In any case, this was a match in which the Vietnamese athletes played better than expected. In addition to reasonable tactics, their fighting spirit is something they deserve to be praised for. The next opponent of Sport Center 3 at 10:35 on May 13 is Al Rayyan (Qatar), who is even stronger than Al Muharraq.
The chances of the Vietnamese men's volleyball team advancing are very small. But with the goal from the beginning of the tournament being to compete for the SEA Games at the end of the year, what they are doing in the AVC Champions League is still a good sign.
