According to VTC News, the World Football Federation independently investigated the Phu Tho Club incident and only asked the VFF for information support. This process began in early 2025, before the national second division tournament started.
Therefore, the matches with negative signs of Phu Tho Club all took place in previous years. In the 2023/24 First Division, this team lost up to 16 matches and had to play in the Second Division.
“Regarding FIFA's decision to discipline Phu Tho Club: From the beginning of 2025, FIFA requested Phu Tho Club to provide information on a number of issues related to Phu Tho Club's competition activities, and at the same time requested VFF to support so that this information exchange is ensured on schedule.
The review and assessment of Phu Tho Club's violations were conducted independently by FIFA, according to FIFA regulations. On May 2, FIFA issued a disciplinary decision against Phu Tho Club due to its involvement in match-fixing in football matches and tournaments. Accordingly, Phu Tho Club must be relegated to the national third division in the next season," the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) wrote in Official Dispatch No. 844/LĐBĐVN-VP.
In addition, VFF affirmed that there are continuous activities to prevent negativity in football, in conjunction with the Criminal Police Department (C02) - Ministry of Public Security .
On May 3, VFF worked with Phu Tho Club, the Department of Culture - Sports - Tourism of Phu Tho province and related units to announce the contents according to FIFA's decision. At the same time, VFF suspended Phu Tho Club's participation in the 2025 national second division tournament and notified the units to continue handling related contents.
Also in the afternoon of the same day, the match between Phu Tho and Tre Ha Noi was immediately cancelled. Other matches that Phu Tho Club had played in the Second Division since the beginning of the season were also cancelled. The Northern team lost to Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh and Tre PVF-CAND. Therefore, all three teams were deducted 3 points in the overall rankings.
