Oscar just left China to return to Brazil to play football earlier this year. |
Oscar was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope – a condition that causes a sudden drop in blood pressure and can cause fainting. The 34-year-old midfielder suffered the health problem during a fitness test on a bicycle for his club Sao Paulo.
According to the NHS , this is a fairly common condition and is often caused by a temporary disturbance of the autonomic nervous system, causing a sharp drop in heart rate and blood pressure, leading to dizziness, nausea, sweating, lightheadedness and loss of consciousness.
After completing the monitoring and treatment process, Oscar was discharged from the hospital on November 16. Sao Paulo FC said the Brazilian star will follow a medical rest program for the next few days. On social media, Oscar reassured fans: "Everything will be fine."
However, according to Globo , the former Chelsea star is considering retirement. Experts have stressed that Oscar's condition is not life-threatening and can be resolved with medication or a simple procedure. However, the decision to return to play depends on the player's sense of safety and comfort.
At the age of 34, Oscar is said to be considering a career break with his family, with the possibility of retirement being more likely than continuing to play football. After more than 500 club games, 48 appearances for Brazil, and titles in England, China and his home country, the choice is for health first.
Oscar only returned to Brazil earlier this year, signing a contract with Sao Paulo until 2027.
