Chinese architecture firm MAD Architects has unveiled the design for the Qondesa building in Quito, Ecuador, with a unique curved shape that does not block natural light and views of neighboring buildings, New Atlas reported on May 5. Qondesa is MAD Architects’ first South American project to date.
The exact height of Qondesa has not been disclosed, but MAD Architects says it will be Quito's tallest building. This would put the new structure above Iqon, which is currently the city's tallest building at 130 meters. MAD Architects has not announced an estimated completion date for the new structure.
Qondesa's stone-colored facade is reminiscent of Quito's Old Town, where many historic buildings are built from local volcanic rock. The facade is also meant to evoke the vines that wind around the building to its peak.
Qondesa will still block some of the light from neighboring buildings, but the curved design is a step up from standard rectangular skyscrapers. The new building also features potted plants on balconies and a rooftop garden to create a green space.
Qondesa is a green urban design that includes multiple apartments and is connected to Quito’s main destinations via the nearby Iñaquito metro station. It is therefore ideally located for city dwellers, according to MAD Architects. In addition, the project is located opposite La Carolina Park, a 67-hectare green space in the city center that connects all residential, business and recreational elements.
