I am impressed by the generosity of Vietnamese people!

Reporter (PV) : How did you get to know Congressman Dean Phillips?

Actor Woody Harrelson: I met Dean about eight years ago when we were filming "Wilson" in Minnesota. Dean rented us his house out of hospitality. I don't usually have a strong relationship with landlords. But I got along well with Dean and we became good friends.

PV: Why did you join this trip?

Actor Woody Harrelson: We came here together to ride bikes in North Vietnam and Dean told us that he was coming here (Pleiku-PV) for his dad. I was very excited and honored to be here with him. Because this is a very important time in his life. He said he has never felt so accomplished and touched. It was a wonderful thing.

PV: How do you feel about Vietnam and its people?

Actor Woody Harrelson: As Dean said, a lot of people in my country think of Vietnam as war, but Vietnam is a country; a country with wonderful people who welcome visitors with smiles. When we were riding our bikes and people met us, they waved and said, “Hello,” smiled and were very respectful. We went to a village, played volleyball with the people. It was a great trip. It was a touching trip and an important experience for me.

PV: Does anyone recognize you?

Actor Woody Harrelson: Sometimes. Not as much as in other countries. But it was great. You know. We were Americans and we had internal conflicts about what the Americans did to Vietnam; because the government at the time was using the domino theory of the spread of communism, which had already killed 4 million people, mostly civilians, in the Korean War. And in Vietnam, I think there were 2.9 million Vietnamese, mostly civilians, and over 50,000 American soldiers who died. That was sad.

I don’t know why, but I always feel connected to Vietnam, even though I have never been to Vietnam before. So this trip was also an experience that filled the void and was important to me personally.

PV: What impressed you most on this trip?

Actor Woody Harrelson: It's about the people, it's about the kids. You know, I've been to a lot of countries, but Vietnam is the most peaceful place, the people are the warmest, the kindest, the most wonderful. I feel a connection to Vietnam and I hope to come back. Dean and I have talked about coming back to Vietnam.

After all, the generosity, kindness and sweetness of the Vietnamese people left a deep impression on me.

PV : Do you intend to film in Vietnam?

Actor Woody Harrelson: I don't have any plans yet, but I hope it happens.

PV: Thank you very much!
