Recently, in Na Ngoi commune, Ky Son district, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) coordinated with the Nghe An Department of Agriculture and Environment to organize a workshop on "Disseminating techniques and promoting the expansion of Sanuki garlic growing areas" for ethnic minorities.
Within the framework of the program Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), JICA has supported Nghe An to implement the project "SDGs Business Verification Survey with the Private Sector to Develop the Value Chain for Sanuki Garlic in Nghe An Province, Vietnam" to contribute to solving socio -economic issues in developing countries.
“Sanuki garlic (Japan) has been tested in Na Ngoi commune since 2023 with the participation of cadres and members of the Youth Volunteer Corps 10 and more than 30 ethnic minority households in the surrounding area. Through monitoring, it was found that Sanuki garlic is suitable for the typical land and soil conditions of Na Ngoi commune. Sanuki garlic has all the necessary factors to become a high-value crop in the near future,” said Ms. Vo Thi Nhung, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nghe An .
Mr. Shinoda Takanobu, Deputy Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam Office, emphasized that the climate and soil of Nghe An province are suitable for growing high-quality garlic, equivalent to the Sanuki garlic variety produced in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is expected that the project will soon establish a sustainable value chain, gradually improving income and raising the living standards of people in the highlands of Ky Son district in general and Na Ngoi commune in particular.
Na Ngoi is considered as the “heavenly gate of Nghe An”, where Puxailaileng mountain peak is more than 2,700m above sea level. At the foot of the mountain, scattered villages are covered with clouds all year round. The unfavorable terrain and the somewhat “harsh” weather have hindered the development of the people here for a long time.
Under the attention and guidance of the Party and the State, and the support of foreign organizations, the local government has developed a plan and determined to turn disadvantages into advantages through the conversion of crops and livestock to create momentum for livelihood development. Actual results show that this is the right choice.
Over the years, the Na Ngoi people have reaped the rewards of ginger, which has become a brand. From the rare similarities, the high-quality Sanuki garlic variety is capable of continuing this journey.
At the workshop, JICA technical experts disseminated and provided detailed instructions on the process and techniques of growing Sanuki garlic to households directly participating. This is a really important content because the project creates the initial foundation, and to maintain it consistently and effectively, it requires people to have a firm grasp of knowledge and apply it skillfully to create high-quality products, satisfying the increasingly demanding needs of consumers.
In the coming time, JICA will continue to support the development of the agricultural sector of Nghe An province, with the expectation of building a trusting relationship with the local community, while creating a sustainable and comprehensive model to contribute to improving the lives of rural areas, especially ethnic minority mountainous areas of Vietnam.
