Vietnam and Malaysia established diplomatic relations on March 30, 1973. The bilateral relationship continues to develop well on the basis of the Strategic Partnership established in August 2015. The two sides regularly exchange delegations, hold high-level contacts at all channels and levels, and effectively implement bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

Economic and trade relations between the two countries have developed positively. Malaysia is Vietnam's second largest trade and investment partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Vietnam is Malaysia's third largest trading partner in ASEAN, with two-way trade reaching US$12.7 billion in 2023. Cooperation in other areas such as defense-security, labor, education, culture, tourism, people-to-people exchange, etc. has achieved many positive results.

Besides, the two countries coordinate closely at ASEAN and multilateral forums, sharing views and strategic interests on most regional and international issues.

Currently, there are more than 1,000 Vietnamese students studying in Malaysia in the fields of IT, biotechnology, linguistics, psychology, etc. Every year, Malaysia grants scholarship programs to Vietnamese officials within the framework of the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Program (MTCP).

There are currently about 40,000 Vietnamese people living, working or married to settle in Malaysia. In addition, Vietnam and Malaysia signed a Government-level tourism cooperation agreement in 1994 and the two countries are always among the top tourist sending markets of each other...

The official visit to Malaysia by General Secretary To Lam, his wife and the high-ranking delegation of the Party and State is of great significance in implementing the foreign policy of the 13th National Party Congress and the Party and State's documents on foreign affairs.

The visit is an important milestone in the Vietnam-Malaysia relationship, contributing to consolidating the foundation of political trust between the two countries, demonstrating the consistent policy of the Party and State of Vietnam to always attach importance to and wish to further strengthen relations with neighboring and regional countries, including Malaysia.

Vietnam wishes to work with Malaysia to bring the relationship of trust and effective cooperation between the two countries to a new stage at a higher and more practical level, meeting the development requirements of the two countries in the new period; actively and responsibly join Malaysia and ASEAN countries in building a united and strong ASEAN Community./.
