Sri Lankan President Kumara Dissanayaka begins State visit to Vietnam

On the morning of May 4, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka arrived in Hanoi, beginning a state visit to Vietnam and attending the United Nations Day of Vesak from May 4-6, 2025.

On the morning of May 4, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Anura Kumara Dissanayaka arrived in Hanoi , starting a State visit to Vietnam and attending the United Nations Day of Vesak from May 4-6, 2025, at the invitation of President Luong Cuong.

Welcoming President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka and the delegation at Noi Bai International Airport were: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong; Deputy Minister of Ethnic Minorities and Religions Nong Thi Ha; Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Trinh Thi Tam; Sri Lankan Ambassador to Vietnam Perera Wewala Appuhamillage Udam Poshitha.

Accompanying Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka on his State visit to Vietnam were Minister of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Labor and Tourism Vijitha Herath; Sri Lankan Ambassador to Vietnam Poshitha Perera; Undersecretary of State for East Asia Political Cooperation Shashikala Premawardhana; Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Madhuka Wickramarachchi; Assistant to the President Muditha Nanayakkara.

Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayaka is the President, Minister of Defense, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, and Minister of Digital Economy of Sri Lanka.

President of Sri Lanka Anura Kumara Dissanayaka was born in 1968, in Dewahoowa, Matale, Sri Lanka. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kelaniya.

From 1997-1998, he was Head of the National Executive Committee of the Socialist Student Association, elected to the Central Committee of the People's Liberation Front Party (JVP).

From 1998-2000, he was a member of the Politburo of the JVP. From 2000-2004, he was a Member of Parliament. From 2004-2008, he was Minister of Agriculture, Land, Irrigation and Livestock.

From 2008-2010, he was the leader of the JVP in the National Assembly. From 2010-2014, he was re-elected as a Member of the National Assembly. From 2014-2020, he was the leader of the JVP.

From 2020-2021, he was re-elected as a member of the National Assembly. From 2021-2024, he was President, leader of the JVP, the core of the ruling coalition of the National People's Power Party (NPP).

Vietnam and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations on July 21, 1970. The two countries have traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation.

Political parties in Sri Lanka have sympathy and value relations with Vietnam, considering Vietnam a successful model in economic development for Sri Lanka to learn from. Sri Lanka has recognized Vietnam as having a full market economy.

Speaking to VNA reporters ahead of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka's visit to Vietnam, Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Trinh Thi Tam said that President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka's visit is the first visit to Vietnam in 16 years since 2009 by a Sri Lankan head of state and also the first visit to Vietnam by President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka since taking office in September 2024.

For Vietnam, the visit will be an opportunity to reaffirm its respect for Sri Lanka, a traditional friend and important partner of Vietnam in the South Asian region, and to discuss and promote mutually beneficial cooperation, especially in areas where both countries have strengths such as trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, education, culture, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and people-to-people exchange.

The visit contributes to promoting cooperation in new and potential fields such as digital transformation, digital economy, energy transformation, artificial intelligence, etc.

The visit took place on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Sri Lanka (1970-2025), an opportunity for the two sides to review their cooperative relationship after more than 5 decades of formation and development, thereby proposing directions and measures to strengthen and develop friendly and cooperative relations in the new context, in accordance with the interests of the two countries, while contributing to common development, peace and cooperation in the region.

"I believe that the Sri Lankan President's visit to Vietnam this time will be the beginning of a period of deeper cooperation between Vietnam and Sri Lanka in the coming years, bringing benefits to both countries and contributing to peace, cooperation, development, and common prosperity in the region and the world," Ambassador Trinh Thi Tam expressed her confidence.
