US President Donald Trump said on November 18 that the US must have a unified federal standard to manage artificial intelligence (AI). He said the technology risks being held back by excessive regulations if each US state sets its own standards.
In a tweet, Mr. Trump said that tightening state regulations is threatening to undermine this growth engine. He emphasized the need for a single federal standard instead of a patchwork of 50 regulatory mechanisms from different states.
The president also warned that without a unified federal standard for AI, China would easily catch up with the US in the race for artificial intelligence.
To address this issue, the US President has urged lawmakers to include federal standards for AI governance in a separate bill or incorporate them into the defense policy bill, also known as the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
Mr. Trump asserted that if this provision were included in the NDAA or passed as a separate bill, no one would be able to compete with the United States.
However, Mr. Trump's post did not provide specific details about the federal standard he proposed.
Mr. Trump is prioritizing winning the AI race against China.
Shortly after taking office for his second term in January, he directed his administration to develop an AI Action Plan aimed at making the US the “artificial intelligence capital of the world ,” and cutting regulatory barriers to spur the field’s rapid expansion.
The rise of AI has raised a number of concerns, such as the risk that this technology could be exploited to undermine democratic processes, facilitate fraudulent activities and lead to job losses./.
