On January 15, the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO) of South Korea announced that it had arrested President Yoon Seok Yeol on charges of leading the rebellion.
Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol speaks to the public at his residence in Yongsan, central Seoul, on January 15, before heading to the CIO office to undergo an investigation. |
Yonhap news agency reported that this is the 43rd day since the martial law incident on December 3, 2024. The arrest of a sitting President by an investigative agency is unprecedented in the history of the Constitution.
"We executed the arrest warrant for President Yoon at 10:33 (local time, 8:33 Hanoi time)," the CIO said.
The office is moving President Yoon Suk Yeol to the Gwacheon government complex and plans to begin questioning him as soon as he arrives.
Before being arrested, President Yoon Suk Yeol made a public video message to the public.
In the message, the impeached leader said he complied with the CIO's investigation to prevent conflicts between law enforcement agencies, despite alleging the arrest warrant was illegal.
He condemned the execution of the arrest warrant and investigation against the President without proper authority, accused the agency executing the arrest warrant of falsifying documents to deceive the public, and did not accept the investigative status of the CIO.
