The 51-year-old Danish tactician has signed a contract until 2028 and will replace Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked despite helping the club win the Europa League.

The decision to appoint Frank was prepared by the Spurs board, who held negotiations through intermediaries shortly before parting ways with Postecoglou. Despite success in Europe, a 17th-place finish in the Premier League saw the Australian lose his job.

Thomas Frank, who made a splash by helping Brentford gain promotion to the Premier League and stay in the league with limited resources, is considered by Tottenham as an ideal candidate for a rebuilding project. With a £10m release clause in his contract, Spurs should have no trouble bringing him to North London.

Frank brings with him a number of trusted associates including assistant Justin Cochrane, performance expert Chris Haslam, analyst Joe Newton and assistant coach Andreas Georgson, who has come from Manchester United.

Technical director Johan Lange played a key role in the deal, having given Frank his first coaching opportunity at B93 in 2004. From there, Frank rose through the ranks at Lyngby, the Danish youth teams, Brondby and then Brentford, where he made a name for himself with his modern, tactically flexible coaching style and ability to develop young talent.

Frank used to favour a possession-based style of play but has adapted well to the more pragmatic demands of the Premier League, particularly excelling at set-pieces and throw-ins. He often uses a back three, which suits Spurs' current squad of full-backs such as Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence.

Despite never winning a major trophy or playing in the Champions League, Frank is highly regarded in the world of football. Pep Guardiola once described him as “one of the most talented coaches” and said it was “just a matter of time” before he took charge of a big club. Jurgen Klopp also heaped praise on Frank, calling him “an interesting person and very flexible in his tactical approach”.

Tottenham have high hopes for Thomas Frank in his new tenure. With the backing of the board, a squad full of potential and a ticket to the Champions League next season, the Danish strategist will have the opportunity to bring Spurs back to the orbit of competing for titles both domestically and in Europe.
