Daniel Levy admitted that Tottenham Hotspur are facing financial difficulties. |
“Since the inauguration of our new stadium in April 2019, we have invested over £700 million net in player transfers,” Levy said in a statement accompanying the financial report published on Tottenham’s website. Levy understands the pressure from the public – demanding the club spend more, buy better players – but he also stressed the harsh reality.
“I often hear people calling for more extravagant spending because we are ninth on the list of the world’s richest clubs. However, looking closely at today’s financial figures, spending must be sustainable,” Levy admitted.
The latest financial report shows that Tottenham Hotspur recorded a slight decrease in revenue for the financial year ending June 2024, down to £528.2 million from £549.6 million the previous year. While not a disaster, this figure reflects the team's absence from European competition last season and their early exit from domestic cups.
This is a financial picture that goes hand in hand with a forgettable 2024/25 season for the "Spurs". While Tottenham fans are increasingly impatient for expensive signings to boost the team's standing in European competitions, Levy frankly stated: this is not the time for reckless spending.
In an effort to prevent the club from falling into financial trouble, Levy leased out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to host events other than football – from NFL games to concerts. This helped the club offset the drop in prize money from the previous season's competitions.
Tottenham's revenue from football matches has decreased by more than £10 million, and their European cup prize money has also plummeted from £56.2 million to just £1.3 million. This figure is expected to fall even further next season if Tottenham finish outside the top 10 of the Premier League and do not qualify for European competitions.
Tottenham's hopes of winning a title and securing a Champions League spot now rest on the Europa League, where they will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals. Levy emphasized: “Winning this competition will bring us a title and a place in the Champions League. We have to give our all to support the team in this crucial stage.”
